Has anyone used a Custom auto sound front speaker setup? I'm looking at the dual voice cone setup to replace the stock single speaker in the dash.

Thanks!

I have one I just removed from my '69. There are several variations in this but the one I have is for non-AC cars and has two 70W 4" speakers. They are well made units which have very good mid-range and high frequency response. (Your're not going to get bone-shaking bass from 4" speakers however.) For some reason, the one made for AC-equipped cars only has 3.5" speakers,so there must be a vent in the way.

Let me know if you're interested. I also have a Custom Autosound USA-1BK black face plate radio/cassette deck too.

I made my own once. The bracket that holds the single speaker seperates from the the speaker and you just cut a piece of wood that fits it. Cut 2 holes for 3 1/2 inch speakers, mount them on the board and it goes right back in like the original single speaker.

I have a "69 with the dual speaker in the middle of the dash set up that I bought from Paddock Parts. It beats the single mono but if you want hi-fi sound its not what you want. I rarely listen to my stereo (like listening to the big block better) so its fine for me.

Guys,

Just remember the important stuff!

If you are running a stock radio, and you have the 2 modern speakers, make sure they are wired in SERIES.

This means if each is 4 ohms, wire them series to yeild a total of 8 ohms or you'll damage the radio's output circuits.

+__________+SP1-___________+SP2-_________-

This demonstrates how. You see the (-) of one speaker goes directly into the (+) of the other one. 4 ohms + 4 ohms yields 8 ohms.

Never use anything less than 8 ohm impedance with your stock radio.

Custom auto sounds usually "pre-wires" their stuff, but they do a poor job of mentioning the ways and hows.

I dont recommend using a speaker in the dash at all unless you are going for original show condition. I say pick up a pair of kicker panels with 6 inchers in them from Original Parts Group, they will sound much nicer, and they have an option to come with Pioneer speakers http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

...or hey do what we did back then...and wire up a set of home speakers and stash 'em in the trunk (the original ground pounders!).

I first bought a set of the Custom Auto Sound speaker set. They were pretty inexpensive. Around $35 I think. They sounded awful. I ended up buying a pair of Polk 4x6s for about $75. I made a board for them just like the Custom Auto Sound one and installed them. They overlap the dash holes a little but sound MUCH better.

Bob,

Which ones did you buy? I'm getting mixed results. While I assume I won't get ground pounding bass, I would like it to sound decent, and not have to cut holes in the kick panels or door panels. My '68 is a non-A/C car, so my kick panels have the vents in them.

If I do go with the kick panel idea, anybody put them there, and how hard were they to do in the non-A/C car?

Thanks!

don't waiste your time installing the 2 speakers in the mono front location, i had this and it sucked, almost as bad as mono, just buy a stereo dash pad/brackets and install some good 4x6's or what ever size they are, i hated mine, and onthis new car it has the stereo pad but no speakers so im currently lookin for some since i have a parts car with the brackets

NOTE: the brackets are cheezy but expensive so you may want to fabricate some yourself

The Polks I put in are EX462A. They are 4x6s mounted long side next to long side on a piece of fiber board that is the exact size of the board that held the Custom Auto Sound ones. (Does that make it an 8x6??) The tops is covered with black material so if something drops down from the dash, it doesn't hit the cones. When mounted, they cover a bit more than the dash grill but close enough.

There is zero stereo separation in the front with this setup. I highly recommend that you install decent stereo speakers in the rear. That will fill in the bass you need and provide some channel separation.

Let's put this in perspective. This is not going to be an award wining solution but it is not terribly expensive and there is no cutting of kick panels or anything like that. It will give you decent sound and besides, to me, the best music is the sound of that motor blowing through those 2 chamber Flow Masters anyway.

I can email you some pictures if you want.

Thanks for all of your help. I did call Custom Audio and talked to them about the kick panels. They make them for OPGI. They do now make them for the non-A/C cars with the kick panel vents now.

So, I think that's where I'm headed.

Thanks again!
