I just got a quote from Hagerty and American Collector's on my '66 SS and was disappointed that they both consider the car "modified", which more than doubles the annual premium ($352 at Hagerty and well over $400 at AC). Apparently, they consider it modified because of the headers I have installed. (The quotes reflected an insured value of $22K.)
Now I know that this car runs healthier than a stock 396, but almost all the mods are internal. I can have a blower on the darn thing and still pay $352! Doesn't seem very equitable.
I'd be interested to know if any of you successfully convinced Hagerty that your cars should be classified as stock even though there are "minor" mods you have made.
Thanks in advance.

AC nailed me for a color change and different wheels and get this...tinted windows. I tried to tell them that my windows are tinted from the factory because I have factory air in the car. They didn't care.

They got you for different wheels?
You have got to be joking ?!?
I use Blueprint Auto Ins., (800) 530-5305. They allowed some minor mods (headers, Hurst shifter, tach) on mine as long as they're listed with them. I got the std rate and pay $140 for $15000 agreed value and 100-300K liability. The coverage is by American Modern Insurance Group. I think the uninsured motorist cost varies by state.

I stuck my original air cleaner on the car when I took it to the insurance place, and they never knew the difference. They asked, and I told them it was original.
well, it's the orignal block, anyway http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
I think insurance companies are just legalized robbery, so I don't mind fudging the truth a bit.

Here is a repeat of an earlier post I submitted on this subject:
I just purchased a '66 SS Chevelle and had the same question about a good insurance company. You can find lots of them on the net with cheap prices but, I was a little concerned about how well they actually payoff if you have a claim. Different states have
different laws governing insurance companies and if your not careful they can leave you
out in the cold and the law protects them. After much research and, even a post here, I
called my State Farm (Texas) agent and they fully insured the car for about $488 per
year . This may seem high compared to the net prices but for me the most comforting
part is I have used this agent for a long time and they have always paid off - no
questions asked. I even had a teenage daughter total out her car and they didn't raise my rates. Bottom line for me - if you make a large investment in a classic car a few hundred bucks a year is a small price for peace-of-mind.
