: cowl induction hood

I have a cowl induction hood with the flapper. I ran a vacume line from the manifold to the check valve then to the vacume diaphram on the flapper door. When I stomp on the gass the vacume from the manifold drops but the check valve holds the vacume to the door and will not let the door open. If I take out the check valve the door works fine. Am I missing something?

Maybe you have the valve in backwards. It only goes one way so that the flapper opens under hard acceleration (drop in manifold vacuum) and then closes slowly. Remove the check valve and suck on each end. One way it should suck easy, the other way it should suck very little. That's the end that goes to manifold vacuum. If it doesn't function this way, it is either faulty or the worng valve. They are now available again, repo, from aftermarket sources (about $40) or there is a valve available from GM that is NOT correct, but it works perfect for a whole lot less money, (about $12) part number is 8997639. I use this GM valve and save my $40 repo for show only.

The 8997639 part number is the GM part number. If you have a local AC-DELCO parts dealer, it is cheaper to get it that way. The AC-DELCO part number is 214-478.

I just bought 2, 2wks ago. I bought them through an AC-Delco parts store. if they can get them, then a GM dealer should be able to get them (if you have a local AC-Delco dealer it's cheaper). Either go back or go to another GM dealer parts dept and try to order it again. I can't believe it was discontinued this quick. Also, ALL GM parts are nationwide on computer, so your local GM parts man CAN, IF HE WILL, get on line and check to see where some are. Last, I must add this, sometimes you have to prod those parts guys. Be sure they ordered the right part number for you, 8997639. ----------- OK, I just hung up the phone from a Chev parts dept that is open until midnight in OKC. They do not stock the valve, BUT THEIR COMPUTER SHOWS THAT IT IS STILL A GOOD PART NUMBER. I would strongly recommend that you find a different parts guy that is willing to be more helpful.

Hi DZ. Kudo's to the OKC GM parts people. When I worked for the Post Office and was out in Norman for training, one of my classmates bought a 65 Malibu while we were there and it had a broken t/s switch and the instructor called a GM(Chevy?) dealer and had the switch delivered to the school. This was back in the 80's.

Our sponsor now carries the repo part and it looks promising. They also had the incorrect part last year when I restored my '70 SS. It works just fine and cost $4.95.

The inexpensive valve is still available, but not all dealers offer AC Delco parts. It is also made out of plastic. There is a new reproduction available (second time around) and it is made of metal. Metal VS. Plastic, who wins?

I think I may have caused a little confusion here with the valve that is available from GM. I DO NOT ADVOCATE REPLACING THE CORRECT STYLE REPO VALVE WITH THE GM PLASTIC VALVE. The valve from GM is a valve that can be used for daily driving and it works perfect. This plastic valve will allow a person to "save" their correct valve for shows, impressing the girls or whatever. Also, it is MUCH cheaper. Actually, while the repo valve is available again now, I think it would be wise for anyone who has a functional CI hood to get one.

Stan,
Did you really mean $4.95?!?!? If so, I think I will buy 10.

I bought one of those repo's from Ground Up. Works great. I checked all over and nobody else had one. It's shown here www.grounduppm.com/chevelle.shtml (http://www.grounduppm.com/chevelle.shtml) for $36.95.

I know this is not a strictly Chevelle question, but it could apply. I have found a place in So Cal that will make a fiberglass CI hood for my 72 Monte Carlo (hey, it's an A body car). Would I be losing anything if I don't make my CI hood "functional"?

It would suck all the time through the cowl. But since I am ruining the originality of the car anyway, are there any downsides to this approach?

I went by my local bow tie dealer today and tried to order one of those CI valves. He told me they don't stock it.Ask to check others locally, none.I went ahead and had him try and order it.I paid him for it,he told me he'd call when it's in.He called me later today and said the part isn't available anymore!!!!And said to come back by and he'd refund my money!!!!???? This is a large dealer that does alot with the High Perf.parts,so what's a guy to do??????

Hey John, Thanks for the tip on the parts locator. It's a great service.

Well that's amazing! As I mentioned earlier, I just ordered and bought 2 from my local AC-Delco parts store. They came in 3 days, about $9ea. Then after your post, I called my Chev parts guy and he still shows it as a good number. And like John says, there is a parts locater which ALL GM parts depts use to locate parts. If there are any in the USA and you want one, get your parts guy to locate and order one. One more time, I'm not advocating this little plastic valve be used to replace the correct repo valve, but just to save it while you drive your car on the street.

Ac-Delco probably still has them even though GM doesn't.Most GM dealership use GM and Delco parts.I know I ordered plenty of both while I worked there.Ask yor local dealer if they use delco parts too and if they do order the delco part # Tom mentioned earlier. If they don't go to another dealer. It doesn't have to be Chevy dealer only.Any Pontiac,Olds,Buick,Caddy,GMC Truck dealer can get the same parts that Chevy can get and most can look up parts for all GM cars and trucks.

The person who originally came across this part was someone here at TC, but I forget his name. He discovered it as a factory installed part on the air cleaner system of his 84 Buick. So definitely, it was a factory 84 Buick part.

Well, guess what? Just for the heck of it I just now went out to check my Olds parts book which only goes up to 1981. This valve was also used on the air cleaner system of V-6 Olds engines back to 80. So it had to be a VERY common part among GM cars.
