Well, I opened up a can of worms, I'm putting a 88 Monte SS steering box in my 66 and I went to change the seals in it and I took too much apart. I have cleaned and re-assembled it all but now the input shaft does not turn the out put/ pitman shaft. Does there have to be some hydraulic fluid in the system to work and shouldn't the input shaft turn the output shaft no matter what. All the parts and seals are in the right spot I was very carful about that. The worm gear on the inside that has ball bearings around it was tuff to do but it all went back in correctly. Should I add pressure to it or did I do something seriously wrong (besides opening it up.
Please Help.

Sorry man but I would say something is wrong inside.Try backing the adjustment off on the pitman shaft could be binding.Should turn w/o fluid...FRED

Why don't you use your old steering box and put the 88 guts in it. This way you don't have metric P/S line fitting or metric rag joint.

Brob, I may do that, but I have to buy a new line either way and the pressure valve/relief that goes into the pump get swapped from the SS pump making it metric and I have the $15 coupler from an 80s Chevy pickup that makes the swap a piece of cake. I'm afraid if I open my old box up I won't get it back together correct either. So I don't want to be stuck W/O a powersteering box. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the SS box back together right. One of the Team Chevelle members has been so kind as to offer to put it back together for me. If I pay the shipping. I may take him up on it.
Thanks for the help though. I figure no matter what happens It is a learning experience. Maybe a costly one.

Whittaker,
Put the thing back together. Do not be concerned if it is correct or not. Take the box down to the NAPA dealer and have him exchange it for a rebuilt unit for $150.
Chalk it up to a learing experience.
I did the same thing you did, but when I started the car, the wheel rotated to the left until it hit the stop. I was not strong enough to stop it and I can bench press 275lbs. Imaging if that happened while you were cruising down the road. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif bummer.
Some things are ment to be done by professionals.
Three things are not meant to be disassembled.
1. BB guns
2. Washing machines
3. Stearing boxes

I checked into doing that last night while I was at Auto Zone. They were $189, so I may have to check out Napa as well.
Thanks for the input.

Ont thing you should do is use the end cap from you old steering box so your stops are correct.
We have a team member who has posted the assembly manual. It may be in the archives. Those ball berings are two different diameters and are alternated during assembly.
