Since I can't afford it, maybe one of you can!
Was going camping and on the main road of the grounds, I saw a red ’64 El Camino. So I stopped at the guys house to ask him about it. It has a 327ci motor, trouble is the previous owner installed a Sears AC unit and you cannot see the #s. Being how old the motor looked, I have no reason to think it has been changed- besides people don’t usually swap in 327s. He told me he would gladly take out the A/C to check #s for any prospective buyer as he just got it up for sale and has not had the time to do it. The 4 speed M-20 is original as is the 12- bolt posi it’s connected to.
The body is in good shape and has been repainted once to a similar but not exact shade of Ember RedThere is some bubbling on the wheel wells, but no major rust. The bed is in fantastic shape and is solid, although there is some paint chipping (it has a bed cover) but is shockingly solid for such a commonly rusted out area.
The undercarriage is dirty, but no major rust and the front end parts will need refinishing. The guy told me it had some cancer on the frame, but he welded in some new metal and fixed it up (he’s a Steel Union welder by trade). This is not a surprise since he had 3 other classics, mostly 30’s and 40’s cars. He told me he ran out of cash to restore the Elky and I believe him as his garage is well equipped and his other cars are immaculate.
The interior was hit and miss. The dash was in great shape and looked like it was redone (in red) recently, but the speedo needle broke off- all gauges are original save for the massive AC vent unit (the car did not have factory air). The steering wheel is original but the paint is chipping off. The drivers side door panel rotted off (he still has it) and the window glass is missing, but the pass side panel is original and in ok shape. The seats were covered in white, but were originally red.
The floors seemed solid.
The engine started fine, but is really dirty, as is the compartment, but no rust and the firewall looked fine.
It has SS wheels, not sure if they were original. Could a 327 Elky be an SS back in ’64? There was no SS badges except for the “V8” symbol on the fenders and a “Chevelle” emblem, not sure why since it was an Elky.
The guy wants $4,000 which frankly is a steal, but its out in the middle of nowhere and they are not online, so I thought I’d post it here for him.
This car would make a great driver/project and appears mostly original, the AC is easily removed, but is so old, why not keep it? These early (pre-’68) Elkys are getting less and less common.
Interested parties should email me directly as he did not want his phone # pasted on the web.
The cowl tag reads:
043
ST 64-5860 BDY- EP 7169
TRIM- 772 PNT- 922 B
ACC- 2L 50
“Painted in Magic Mirror Acrylic Lacquer”
I did not think to get the sticker info near the drivers side door latch, but will check it out if need be.
The only thing is that 772 is red trim for a base Malibu and 786 is red trim for an SS according to my #s book.
