my transmission stays in first gear, sort of shifts into second- but its like i have a really high stall, i rev it up, and about 3k it "jumps". vaccuum line was connected. pulled the canister out, spring was missing, canister seemed kind of loose? is the tranny fried? i figured i would get a warning of some type... it was fine one night, next morning it was junk! any help/thoughts/ideas are appreciated. thanks

modulator valve, they are not expensive or hard to change. try it before you take it in

Rich,

The canister you are referring to sounds like the modulator. The modulator should be on the passenger side above the pan towards the front of the trans. There should be a vacuum tube from it going up along the firewall to the manifold.

There is one bolt that holds it in place, you can buy a new one at any auto parts store. Remove the vacuum line attached to it, remove the bolt and it's out.

Hope this helps.

Rich

Don't lose the pin when you pull the modulator out!!! There will be a small steel pin in the modulator and they fall out sometimes when remove the modulator from the trans housing. Watch out for it.

I'm a bit confused.......spring, pin......

First, the vac. modulator valve is located on the right rear of the trans. it has a vac. hose going to it. if it was loose it's probably because whomever installed it did'nt push it in flush before re-installing the bolt and retainer. This is the one that has a pin inside that, I've never seen fall out.

Second the Accumulator is located on the left side of the case. It is a domed cover held in place with a wire clip. It has a servo and spring inside. the spring is sometimes removed to make the shifts firmer.
