Ok you guys. 68 Elky, A/C, 327, auto, P/B, P/S, completely stock.
In the engine compartment above the air conditioning dog house is a canister that looks like half of a one pound coffee can. There are two hose connections facing the firewall, one about 1/16" diameter and one abot 1/8" diameter.
What is it and what does it do?
It does not have the hoses connected to it.

should be a vacuum storage canister for the vacuum controlled heater/A/C controls.

It is a vacuum reservoir that aids the A/C vacuum motors in their operation. This is needed mainly at idle when manifold vacuum is low.

I checked my service manuals, but it's not in them.
Where do the hoses go to and from?
Oh, by the way, A/C works, but not as cold as it should be. Freon added last spring, was told there is too much oil in the system from a life time of do-it-yourself charges.
Need to dump the system, clean, and recharge.
Probably do this next spring and convert to R134.

Yes, it sounds like the a/c vacuum canister. I need the mounting bracket/clip that attaches to this. Anyone have one or know where I can get one? Need it for my 69 El Camino SS resto.

Im working with the same thing on my 68 chevelle.the small 1/16 hose goes to a vacuum
source either on the intake manifold or the carb.base.(you need to buy hoses) the larger hose 1/8 goes through the fire wall and ends up at the vacuum switch where the top a/c control lever is.this switch routes vacuum to the right side vent door(behind the kick panel) that allows the cold air to be recirculated and it also controls the "vacuum diaphram" in the right side cowl (in the space where windshield wiper control arms are) this opens and closes the "outside" air entering the blower.
