i know that this isn't a chevelle but i figured that someone here can answer my questions with all of the knowledge floating around here. i am 18 and have been searching for a muscle car and i found a 1970 skylark. the car is in primer now the owner sanded it down. it was owned by an old man until 1996 when a younger man bought it(the present owner) the car has 87,000 original miles on a 350 engine(stock 2bbl) now has an aluminium intake and 4bbl and i runs strong. the interior is very nice. the cloth top was well taken care of and looks new. the two rear quarters are rusted, but he has two brand new ones to go with the car. the drivers door is dented, but he has two good condition doors that came off a parts car. the trunk is rusted out. the fender, both doors(besides the dent) and floors are very solid. it also has brand new american racing rims. he is giving me all the parts he took off the parts car which is a th400 trans, 350 engine, trim pieces, original wheels and other misc. parts. He is asking $3200 for the car, is it worth that? also i was told that outer wheel wells can not be purchased for this car, is that true? Also i am looking for an opinion from all of you on weather r not it would be to hard and expensive to restore this car even though i pretty much have all the parts to do it?
thanks, sorry for the long post
Tom

the real question is do you like the car well enough to put all that work into,i bought my 71 skylark to drive around until i get my chevelle running but i cant leave any thing alone so i bought a 455 for it and am slowly fixing it as i go along if you really like the buick then go ahead and get it if not then pass on it until you find something that you really want, i like mine but to each there own oh and buick parts are about double what chevelle parts are.chaz

Tom,

Mechanical and interior is easy to do. Body work is hard/expensive unless you can do it yourself.

The problem with this car sounds like the body. It appears to have the same rusty trunk that all A-bodies have. That means you will have to replace the rear panel between the rear window and trunk. Check the quarters, doors and fendors for rust.

Then look around at other cars in the same condition. And see what they are going for.

You also mention "cloth top" is that a vynal top, or is the car a convertable? If vynal, this is another area for rust to hide. Check it very carefully.

Don't fall in lust with the first car that you see. Take your time, you're only 18, you've got plenty of it!

thanks guys for all your help. sorry i meant it has a vinyl top. i do like the car, but i really like camaros and chevelles more. i can't do the body work my self. the thing is i have been looking for and older car since i was 14 or 15 and haven't found anything with a decent body for around $4000. i can do some mechanical work, so if it doesn't run to well i don't care. i just want to get an old muscle car, so if anyone knows of one please let me know. i really want something to tinker with.
thanks
Tom

I here ya..I live in MN and I had a hard time finding a solid A-body for a decent price. I ended up finding el camino that had previously come from SD. If I were to do it again, I'd go on a road trip to a place where it doesn't snow.

Tom,
I've learned the hard way, and it's taken several lessons to learn this: Even if it takes longer and/or costs more, get what you WANT the FIRST time! In the long run it will be cheaper because you will end up there anyway, and you'll be happier since you won't be dreaming away of a Chevelle while your driving something else that is taking all of your money, makeing that dream even further away.

I don't know him or the car, but I'd certainly investigate Riffer's offer... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

good luck anyway you go though!

trust me i am definatly going to seriously look into in some way obtaining Riffers car. it looks like an awesome car, but i think that it is just too far away from me. does anyone know how much it would cost to get it shipped to Chicago? or another way to get it here?
Thanks again guy

It was going to run me $700 to have it shipped to NH, so shipping may make the car beyond what it should cost. I have many pictures now that I need to get off of my dad's digital cam that I will send.
My price of $4500 I think is fair, but add shipping to it and I don't think it's worth the money and it's my, err my wife's, car.

Zio, Is there any way that you could catch a bus to NJ during the holiday break and drive the car back home?

Man, if I was you I would definately go for Riffers car if I was you. But I'm not you. That's the point. Don't let anybody tell you what to do. WAIT until you find a good car that you love. If you love camaros and chevelles, then don't get the skylark. Wait for a car that YOU like. I live in Illinois as well and know how hard it is to find a good body. I did find a 1967 Chevelle 300 4dr, with the body in great condition. Sure it's only got a 250 L6 and a 3 on the tree (for now), but I love it.

i was thinking of going over thanks giving or x-mas but i work during that time and i can't take off because those will be my only two pay ckecks until summer. i was thinking if you still have the car over x-mas i might leave work on a friday and drive out there and back on the weekend. but i don't know when you are going to sell it.

My son has a 67 Chevelle SS.New interior, new engine although I put a 327 in it as I thought a 396 was to much for a 16 year old kid. The engine and interior is all new. The body is pretty good. No rust just a couple teenage dings. It does need a trunk floor though. The windshield has a couple of rock chips but I have a brand new one for it. The suspension has been all re-done along with all new brakes, wheel cyls., brake lines, emerg brake cables, ball joints, tie rod ends, the a-arms have been all re-bushed, new shocks etc. Oh ya its a 4 speed with buckets. I think he is wanting to sell it i will check on the price.

Fred,
Sorry to hear about the special "bambi-customization", but glad to hear the family is ok. My daughter's husband hit a small doe with her Integra, and it totalled the car! That proud old chevelle is a great "safety" feature.. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I know of a '67 Malibu, 283 powerglide car. It is a solid Texas 2door hardtop, I wouldn't be afraid to drive it a few states. think he wanted $3500, interior is good not perfect. needs paint though, anyway replacing shhetmetal can get real expensive. friend of my is a nova fanatic, he got it in a trade
