: small block swap in a 65
flip65 Aug 31st, 00, 6:48 PM First off... Thanks to all fellow gear-heads that have given me advice while I swap my pitiful straight-6 for a fire-breathing 383.
That said, I'm having a problem getting my throttle linkage to work right. There seems to be a difference in the pivot bar that mounts to the firewall on cars equipped with a 6 and a small block.
I called muscle factory and they were no help.
Does this part exist aftermarket or, do I need to find it used?
chev64 Aug 31st, 00, 6:54 PM Yes, there is a difference, the 6cyl one goes down and the V8 one goes up. Did you try our sponsor Ground Up? I have a 6cyl in my 64, but I'm leaving in there, that's how I know. Good luck with your swap.

Philip Aug 31st, 00, 10:41 PM Are you guys talking about the arm that clamps onto the gas pedal assembly at the fire wall and has the rod from the carb hooked to it? On my 64's the six and V-8 models look to be the same, now the Powerglide linkage is totally different between the two engines.
Bryan Sep 1st, 00, 3:00 AM Here's an idea for you, long as you're not concerned with date-coded, correct restos:
Fab in a cable linkage from a later model car. 1st thought is GM(which works well), but F**d used one in the mid 70's that had a return spring built into the end of it. Works great!! I used one in my old dirt track car.
It was easy to install and trouble free. Also, it operates much smoother than a rigid linkage and provides for better throttle control, especially on a rough track. One more thing, though...I never really trusted just 1 throttle return spring, so I ran with 1 in the conventional location, and utilized the trick built-in one on the cable as a backup. Hmmm, does that make me one of those guys who wear a belt AND suspenders???
...luck

Carl Brune Sep 1st, 00, 6:22 AM In 1965 the arms are a little bit different, even tho the assembly manual shows them to be the same. The L6 ones have an offset so that the rod to the carb moves parallel to the centerline of the car. Phillip, didn't I sent you a lever about a year ago? It was from a 65 v8 car, definitely different from the one in my 65 L6 car.
chev64 Sep 1st, 00, 2:13 PM I just went and looked at the arm on my 64 and it is offset to the drivers side. This is for a 6 cyl car with a manual trans.

BAD415 Sep 1st, 00, 7:00 PM Did this kinda swap afew years ago. What I used was an arm from an early GM V-8 car. They're pretty easy to find. Some are shaped to bend towards the engine. Try to find one thats straight up and down.

If you don't have any success, go to the classified ad section of Team Chevelle and place a Wanted Ad. I have always had excellent results with the ads.

david_396 Sep 2nd, 00, 8:21 AM Found this on E-Bay. don't know if this is the throttle linkage you need. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=422411392
Philip Sep 5th, 00, 9:50 AM Carl I still have the one you sent me and it is the same as the one thats on the car now. I guess the existing one must also be from a V-8. The L-6 linkage rod fit and worked just fine. So flip65 it seems I have an extra one and if you want it for the cost of shipping let me know. Philip
