I'm ready to get my exhaust system for my 69' chevelle 396 and was thinking of getting the 3" exhaust system from Torque Tech. My question is does anybody have the 3" system in their 69' chevelle and did you get the straight or turn down tailpipes?. I want to put chrome tailpipe tips on and want them to exit right under the back bumper. Do I have to get the straight pipes?.

Do you really want to go to 3". Too large a diameter will sometimes slow your car down. You need some restriction. I myself would stay with 2-1/2". Just my .02.

My .02. After reading the Torque Tech
catalog, I think a 3" headpipe and 2.5" backpipes would be best for my 396 currently in my '67. I will purchase the 3" tails since a hot 427 is almost ready to go. But Mark is right, at least consider dropping your tail diameter to 2.5" The other bene is that chrome tips for 2.5" are easy to find. I don't think 3" are.

BTW, I like the angle cut turn downs pictured on the Goat in their catalog. But the '67 never cam with chrome ends and I think your '69 and later did, didn't they? So do it like the factory did.

David,

I have a 69 SS and use the torque tech system. I used 3" from headers to dynomax mufflers then 2 1/2" out of mufflers to the back. I have a fairly peppy 427 in mnine and am well pleased withthe quality and sound of the system.

Another vote for the combination system! I have a 69 with a 427 in it and have Hedman headers, a Torque Tech 3 inch exhaust from the collectors to the mufflers (with a crossover pipe), Dynomax mufflers, 2.5 inch tail pipes, and stock chrome SS tips straight out the back. It may be overkill, but it sounds good and really allows that big block to breathe.

I have a 71' with a 383 and i use the full 3" torque tech system with 3-chambers sounds great but make sure you have enough motor to back it up.

I have the complete 3" Torque Tech system, Dynomax mufflers, and the turndown tailpipes on my '68 Chevelle SS with a ZZ502/502. It certainly breathes well and is quiet at idle. However, I agree with most of the others that a complete 3" system is a little overkill for a 396. If the 396 is close to stock, a complete 2-1/2" system should be more than adequate. A modified 396 would probably benefit from 3" exhaust pipes with 2-1/2" mufflers and tailpipes.
