Is there any way to tell if the heater core is good or bad? my 69 was pretty much disassembled when I got I didn't see any indication on firewall, floor pans where it may have leaked in the past.

If the car is disassembled enough to take the core out , take the core to a radiator shop. They can pressure test it for leaks and also you could have them flush out the build up inside.I know mine had a bit of loose rusty sludge it the core and didn't throw much heat.Worked great after the cleaning.

Dusty,
I just put a core in my '64. A fairly touch job to remove that last heater box bolt behind the fender skirt!
If the car is disassembled I would definitely replace with a new core and rebuild the heater box Not that expensive
( $45.00) and a lot easier now than later.

I checked the heater core for my 69' by using an old garden hose with the end cut off and put it on one end of the core with a clamp and held my hand over the other end and turned on the water. This is a quick way of doing it, but if you want to be 100% sure I would take it to a radiator shop.

Thanks for all the input, I have the core out and will have it looked at. I know this is one of the few in-expesive items I'll need to replace...Thanks again!!

I think this would fall into the "If it's already out, go ahead and replace it" catagory. You should be able to find a new one for less than $50
