: rechroming - any suggestions?

I am looking to rechrome the bumper guards (front and rear) for my 1968 Chevelle. I called a local re-chroming place which quoted me a price of $60 for each guard!! I thought $240 for the front and rear is much too high. Can anybody relay any suggestions or advice where I can go to get a quality rechroming service? Any experiences are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Matt

The Bumper Boyz are out of, I believe, California, where you can buy a bumper outright or exchange yours with one of their's. They look pretty when you first buy one, but wipe on it, clean it, or even touch it, then the chrome comes off and the finish scratches. They only have a 2 year warranty but will do whatever to get out if it. Sorry if I'm bashing, but I'd hate to see a fellow TC'er get ripped. To me, I wasted $250. Shoulda just thrown it out the window, or gone to the nudey bar! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Matt,
Personally, I would expect to pay in the area of $250 a piece to get bumpers rechromed. That is to get a quality job.

A friend of mine recieved a bumper from them last week, when he unwrapped it the chrome as peeling off of one end. They were nice on the phone and said he would have another one in 3 weeks. I will pass on what I have heard here.

Matt are you just talking the guards, then i think i would check around, seems a little high. If you are talking bumpers,it's to low.

Matt -

In today's replating world I would say $60 a guard is fairly reasonable.

Just my $.02 worth.

Good luck.

I just picked up NOS bumper guards, front and rear, for my '72 still in the original boxes with drilling template for $230 on Ebay.
That also included the rubber and hardware.

Just my $0.02. May want to look around.

Are you serious????? (About Bumper Boyz). We saw them last year at Carlisle and we were gonna buy there stuff....but we decided to look around. Then we went againt his fall but they were out of bumpers for my year. Good thing I didn't buy them. Should I get repro's from OPG?

Chroming can get expensive if it's show quality. I only use Roman Widanka at United Plating here in Brampton. He's pricey, but his work is flawless. He's currently doing my hood vents for my '69, and it will cost me $170.00 Cdn. For a bumper he wants $650.00 Cdn, and will actually discourage you from using him for that unless you absolutely have to have show quality chrome. He feels bad about having to charge that much, but his work speaks for itself, and he is one of the most honest people I've ever met! I want to get my bumpers redone next year and he asked me if i was sure I had to have show quality, I told him yes! He also does stainless buffing and anodized aluminum.

I've been quoted $60@ to get my 69 bumper guards replated. If you look around, you might be able to find NOS guards for around the same price. Remember, you get what you pay for.
Dittos on the bumper boyz. Avoid buying from them or giving them your bumper to rechrome. I gave them a perfect core two years ago and got back a piece of junk. My original core is gone forever. I am still dealing with them on this issue. They have sent me 3 bumpers so far, and they all have problems.

I had my front and rear bumpers for my 70 straightened and rechromed (show plate quality) by Keystone Automotive Industries on Route 378 in Bethlehem PA. Phone #610 865 5553. Excellent work, absolutely beautiful. Price was $250 each and well worth it. I believe they are also located in several locations in NJ also (Kenilworth, Palmyra, Newark...)Go to Yahoo.com and type in Keystone Automotive in their yellow pages. Call them up and see if they are the same as the shop I used in Bethlehem. They ship them out to their main plating shop in Minnesota. The $250 covered shipping back and forth as well. You can see them (sort of) by looking at my link below. Picture probably doesn't do them justice. Oh, lifetime warranty on them also!!

The price of $60 is about average for guards by all the show quality replaters . You get what you pay for any less than 60 i would be careful unless you want street quality I had the bumpers for my 57 chevy replated by Carolinia Bumper in Charlotte NC and it is the most beautiful chrome i have seen lately the replaters have a lot of EPA rules to follow and they all tell me that has raised prices . ask about the steps they do , do they use copper to fill scratches etc
