I have a friend who wants to remove his dealer decal from his car. Any ideas on how to get it off without taking the paint off as well?

Use a blowdryer and slowly warm it up. Once it is good and warm it should peel right off.

Also, 3M makes a woodgrain and stripe remover that is supposed to be safe for your paint. I'm sure this would work on the decal.

I've always used a hair-dryer to remove those stupid decals. Just make sure you don't get the paint real hot. Fan the dryer across the surface.

You can buy stuff at office supply places that is designed to remove tape and stickers. I have used this on many other things, just check it on a small area in an inconspicious place, sometimes it will cloud plastics.

Remember one thing, if you take the decals off with a hair drier. Depending how long they have been on there the paint may have not faded with the rest of the car under them, you will still be able so see the decals in a darker shade paint. (EX. Your car is light green, stripe decals may come off and be a darker green where they were) This doesnt look to nice http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

You can but plastic scraper blades that look like steel razor blades that you put into a scraper (like for gaskets). I have seen pinstriping peel right off with one of these. A body shop supply place would know about them.

I work for a dealership and have to remove dealer stickers from newer cars. What I use is a like about 5 inches in diameter round eraser with a threaded part you put into a cordless drill. This works great and does not harm the paint and is quick also. Just buff with a towel and the shine comes right back. Not sure where you get a product like this but it is very useful. Maybe check with some body shops. I don't know how it would work on a 30 year old sticker though.

If that sticker is in fact 30 yrs old, when you take it off, the paint will be much darker where the sticker was as Moloko said earlier. If you still take it off and have some stubborn adhesive from the sticker, use some stuff called Final Clean. It is normally used to clean a car just before you paint.
It is specifically for NOT harming paint, but will remove everything else you can think of.

Hey !! Finally a question I can answer !!

Ok I've been doing this for a part-time job for what seems like a lifetime. I've done this thousands of times. When we have a Semi come in that needs new lettering, what I do is park it at night, making sure that the decal is facing the rising sun. The next morning go out around 11:00 and make sure you bring your wifes blow dryer. We use heat guns, but if you in experianced I would stick to the blow dryer to be safe. When your heating the decal make sure you get it so it's hot, about as hot as you can stand touching it. DON'T get it any hotter then you dare to touch it, or it may bubble your paint. Then we use a thin plastic scrapper to get a corner started. You can use a razor blade, but be vary careful. with the combination of the car warming up in the suns rays, and you heat gun, any decal should come off very slick. Most of the time you can skip parking your car in the sun, but if the decal is real stubborn, this is a great method because it allows the adhesive to warm slowey and have more of a melting effect on it. I've never had a decal that I couldn't get off using this method. Be warned. Once you get off the decal, you might have glue that is stuck to the paint. Just go down to a store, and get something that has a citric acid, most are called "glue-gone" or something to that manner. After that, use a denatured alcohol to get off the glue remover. After all that there should be no hint a decal was ever there http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif More of a science to this then you thought...ehh ? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
