I just put on my new cowl induction air cleaner with new flange and seal. I love listening to the 454 breathing through the hood and sucking cool fresh air. Anyway the hood closes a little hard and im wondering if the new seal will collapse a little after a while??? I checked it to make sure it wasnt collapsing the seal to much and its not, i think the seal is just a little stiff. I know someone in here has been there. Any advise is appreciated.

I cant wait to get the flapper flapping.

OH YES! It will collapse, in time. Then you will be wondering if it still seals. If you push the hood down slowly, until the seal contacts the duct, and then push it on down until it latches, you will notice the skin of the hood flexes. I am 100% satisfied that this is OK, My new CI hood has been on 2yrs now with no ill effects. JUST MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT THE CARB/CLEANER/RING ARE NOT SO HIGH THAT THEY CAUSE INTERFERENCE WITH THE DUCT. Only the seal should touch the hood and then compress somewhere between 1/4 to 3/4 its thickness. If so, you are OK. There are 2 of these CI hoods in my family, one original, one repo.
Also, spray some silicone on a rag and wipe the contact area of the seal. This helps it slide around on the duct as the hood is closing and will allow it to compress more evenly. Which in time, will result in it being evenly folded over without ugly wrinkles developing.

Thanks DZ, i noticed this morning that its not as stiff as it was last night. After a few more heat ups and cool downs it should be fine. I used armoral on the seal so it wouldnt stick to the hood.

I LOVE IT

How hard is it to set up a cowl induction on a car that originally did not have it? I have a '71 malibu with the plain hood, but the hood needs replacing when i get it painted in a year or so, and I want to set up a cowl induction hood on it, not just an SS hood, I want the functioning cowl.

How available are aftermarket but original looking cowl hoods? How bout installation kits?

Chris,

IT'S ALL AVAILABLE, EVERY TINY PIECE!!!
I just put a complete repo on my 70 Malibu conv 2yrs ago (you can buy a GM or repo hood for half the GM, your choice). If I were doing a perfect resto, I would buy a GM hood. But I wanted one for the sake of having a CI hood, so I got a repo. Garaunteed, VERY few pros can spot a repo. My son's car has an original hood and with my car side by side his, the difference is NOT worth twice the price. Some of the parts that you get from an aftermarket source are still GM parts, but if you buy EVERYTHING from the same aftermarket source, the savings you may get by buying a few parts from a Chevy dealer is not worth the hassle. CI hoods ONLY came on BB cars, but my 70 has a SB400 and a complete working CI hood. It's great and works perfect. All BB cars with a CI hood had a low rise intake manifold. Consequently, they used about a 2in spacer between the top of the carb and the bottom of the air cleaner. On my SB400, I have the really hi-rise, early Z28 intake plus a 1/2in spacer between the carb and intake, and as a result I don't need the spacer.
I installed EVERY piece for a complete system and it looks and functions just as if Chev had installed it at the factory. IT'S GREAT!!

I'm with DZ except for using every piece. Lose the internal flapper and it will work better than factory(better air flow). Just my preference.

I agree, with the internal door/frame completely removed, it should significantly increase air flow as well as provide FULL TIME outside air to the carb. I just like having all the little tricks in my hood. I think it's neat to hear the solenoid snapping the door open/closed.

cool that was my question, my car is starving and my flapper isn't hooked up so it's trying to suck air elsewhere, i was gunna just prop that door open, but i think i will just remove it.

If you are talking about the outer door, it doesn't matter if it works or not. The outer door really doesn't provide the outside air for the carb. The outer door is really just for looks/effect. Most of the outside air probably comes from the windshield base around the back edge of the hood. If you take a close look through the windshield from inside the car, you can actually see the inner door and tell that the air doesn't have to be ducted to the inner door from the outer door.

People used to ask me if the CI hood actualy worked, or served a purpose.
Yes it actualy works!
I once had a strand from a wash mit stuck in the rear molding on the back of the hood, it was there for a day ot two, while driving, you could actualy see the strand getting pulled in from the air flow. " this was before I had a hood screen on the back".
But yes they definatly work!

I also have the cowl induction hood. I replaced the solenoid for the flapper door and now only need to put the cowl air cleaner, spacer and gasket back on. JSL, I'm right down the road from you in Beverly,We have probably been at the same local shows all year.
