Ok, here is the question. Can two different blocks/engines say a 327 and a 350 have the same casting number? The casting # on the block is 3970010. I checked in my small block book and it said it corresponded to a 327 (68-69) and a 350 (68-74). Can this be right? So which is it a 327 or a 350? I was told and also believe it is a 350. What do yall think. Thanks

How close is the intro of the 408 Steve?Soon I hope.I think the reason they corespond is this. Both the 327 and the 350 have the same bore right(4.00").Well if I'm right on that then the only thing that differed between them was the stroke of the crank so essentially the block is interchangeable. Right?I just thought this up so I'm not sure if it's realative.I'm also thinking about what to do with the 307 after I put in the new engine and I've figured out that if I put my 307 crank in a 350(or 327) block I will get a 327.Neat huh?Keep us up to date on the 408

Steve,
Absolutely ! Both motors are 4" bore. You cannot generally tell the size of a small block by the casting number because of this. Same goes with trying to figure out if it is 2 or 4 bolt mains. The same casting number could be either 2 or 4 bolt.
Hope this helps,
Bill

70CHEVELLE2: Thanks for the response. I knew that they had the same bore, but different strokes. Hey, just like the TV show. I just did'nt think they would have the same casting number. What you said does make sense though. So, how would I really know what I have? Is there any other way to tell?

Update on the 408. It's just sitting in my garage on an engine stand just waiting for someone to give it some attention. I also need some help getting it in. Any takers? It looks sweet!!!! Nice fire engine red paint on the block and aluminum heads and manifold. Still need to get some valve covers, headers, and some odds and ends for it. Other than that it is ready to go in. I really want to get it in and running by the end of the month. This weekend is out because of my 1 year marriage anniversary. However, next week is the baby shower which means I can get away and do my stuff. You see, men usually do not attend these particular social functions. To answer you thought lurking around in your head YES, I do move fast. A marriage, house, and baby all within a year. How does one do it? I will keep you all posted. The transformation should be complete within a short time. It's just no fun driving around with a 3.73 posi 12 bolt and street/strip shift kit with a 6 banger. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Billk: That sucks! So in other words I could sell my camaro and tell the buyer it has a 350 in it when it could very well be a 327 or vice versa. Of corse, I would'nt do such a thing, but then again I don't even know. Oh well. What about big blocks. Do some of those have the same casting numbers? Possibly the 396/402.
