: Question about Camaro Gear sets

Will a Camaro 10 bolt gear set fit a Chevelle case and setup. I have found a great deal on a camaro gear set and there is now some discussion about camaros and a lack of carrier/spacer. The man contends that camaros did not use a spacer and made up the difference with the ring gear. Is this true? Will this cause a problem? If so, how could it be corrected?

thanks much.

Will the gear set fit..? That depends on several different things. Are the two rear ends in question the same size-i.e; 8.2" or 8.5"? What "series" gear and carrier are we talking about? Tell us what gear ratio you are switching to and what your old gear set ratio is and then we can give you a little more info..

Well I've currently got a 1970 2.56 axle. The gears he has are for a 72 or 73 camaro, 4.56's. I know I'll have to get a 4 series carrier because there is no way in heck a 4 series gear will fit a 2 series carrier. I am under the assumption that the gear set from the camaro is a 8.2". What years did GM impliment the "corporate" axle, the 8.5"?

8.5 rear started sometime in 72 for chevelles and montes, but they are hard to find. 4:56 is too steep for the street IMO, based on the 400 horse 350 you want to build I would be looking for a 3:73 12 bolt. I think it is a waste of money building the 8.2, in the end you will be close to the cost of a good used 12 bolt posi rear. Besides, if the camaro gears are from a 73 they should be for an 8.5, and I have heard of the 8.5 showing up as early as 70 in camaros (never seen it but saw it stated). So you are taking a chance on the gears working in the first place.
