Does anyone have any ideas for mounting stereo speakers in the rear of a '69 convertible without drastically altering the original appearance? There is an angled steel panel factory spot welded in the well area with cutouts for two 6x9's, but i would think the folded top would tend to muffle the sound and with the boot cover on I could probably forget about hearing anything from the rear.
Thanks,
Rich

That's the catch with the convertibles. You could order rear speakers, but when the the top was down, you guessed it...muffled sound. You could opt for really high quality speakers to 'break the sound barrier' or think about different speaker arrangements. Are you planning on an aftermarket sound system or original?

I used a pair of enclosed speakers next to the rear window crank on top of the arm rest. the ones I have are pretty small but if you use a small window crank like on a vent window you could get bigger ones on there. They are definately noticeable but you don't have to put anything bigger than a screw hole. My speakers are a generic type so I can't give any model numbers but I have seen the same type just about every where you see speakers.

Let's hear more about rear speakers for a conv. I have a 70 that needs rear speakers.

I have a '72 Convertible. I installed the rear speakers in the opening your speaking of. I also needed to use flush mount speaker covers at the rear well area.
To allow for optimum performance with the top up, I cut out the well liner and the grill covers fit directly over the cut outs. Looks very clean.
With the top down, I must rely on the stand alone 150 watt amp mounted in the trunk.

There's always places to put speakers in any car. Depends on how creative, and how much you want to cut up the panels in the car. You could mount subs to the rear panel where the 6X9's would go, and mids in the back on either side of the back seat. Make sure they don't interfere with the hydraulics in the back. The kick panels will handle some shallow speakers as well. Of course the dash can be either a Stereo, or Mono style. Mono dash can house a sub in front also. Tweeters can be hidden inside the vents. There are many possibilities. I will explore some of these, and more when I finish building my 72 conv.

Thanks for the input everyone. Looks like this has been a problem for anyone who has tried to get decent sound in a convertible.
Coppertop, I'm using an old Delco radio w/cheapo speakers right now, upgrade later.
Jason, you mentioned tweeters in the vents. Which vents did you mean?
Thanks,
Rich

I have 2 Blaupunkt box speakers sitting on the rear seat towards the armrests. They are small but still get in the way. I never noticed the 6x9 cutouts in the well, I'll have to check them out.

The front vents comming out of each side of the dash. If you get a small round tweeter, and a hole saw just the right size, you can mount them behind the deflectors in the dash. It's trickey, but it can be done without disrupting air flow much if any. Be carefull not to drill through anything else in the process.
