Anybody heard of a 71 cluster with a 6500 redline?Could this cluster come from the mysterious 71 LS6 or is it a 70 cluster and the buyer doesn't know what he has?

Sure looks like a 71-2 cluster to me, with the blue plastic housing and the white gauge lettering. Maybe it 'leaked' out of GM before the LS6 was cancelled...?

I have personally seen some genuine '71 LS5 cars with the 6500 red-line tach. I believe that they produced some 6500 tachs in anticipation of the '71 LS6 option, and when that was cancelled, they just used them up in the LS5 cars.

You can also have you normal 5500 or 5000 redline tach re-silkscreened at a number of places to achieve the same result. Could it be that the seller knows this as well?

These guages do in fact, exist. I have a '71 SS454/M22 ElCamino that I bought in 1982. It had been raced hard (Still had the weld on traction bar mounts on it). The original engine had been replaced, but the M22 and 3:31 posi rear are original and the numbers match. It is a non-A/C car as well. It has the white faced 6500 RPM tach. I agree with Dan (And have discussed it with him in the past) that it is probably just a "left over" tach from a discontinued option, but why GM would want the warranty nightmare associated with a 6500 RPM hydraulic liftered motor is beyond me. Anyway, those guages are most likely for real.
