: Ram Jet crate motor
72SSAbody Jun 13th, 00, 9:33 AM Has anyone seen or does anyone know what is up with this motor? I would love to drop this thing between my frame rails soon!

street_racer_502 Jun 13th, 00, 9:53 AM Which one are you talking about? They have a 350 Ramjet and a 502 Ramjet. I know they are both really expensive. Don't know about the 350, but the 502 is up around $10,000 I believe. To me the extra cost isn't worth it over the carb version, and it only makes 8 more hp. It makes 17 LESS lbs. of torque. I'm sure it would start good and have even better driveability, but I haven't had any problems with my carb'd 502.

"Sure, it's just a 396...heh, heh,"
Laps Jun 13th, 00, 9:57 AM The RamJet 502 will be priced around $7200 but the real problem is the height of the intake, won't fit under a stock early Chevelle hood. Been told it won't be available until September. I'm going with the carburetor setup because of hood clearance.
72SSAbody Jun 13th, 00, 10:02 AM Hmmm....sounds like Vortech needs some brackets to bolt their supercharger onto these beasts.

DaleM Jun 13th, 00, 10:06 AM There was a 71 or 72 Chevelle at Nashville with the new RAMJET 502. I've got a couple of pictures of it at http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/chevelle_shows/shows.htm - click the 1978-1982 link on the page. It's a beautiful thing that's for sure and a super-clean installation. Don't know about clearance on earlier models but I do know I had to get a 4" scooped hood to clear the Accel/DFI unit on my 67.

72CHEVELLE Jun 13th, 00, 10:29 AM Dale, great site! That yellow 502 is a bad boy!! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Jim Pace (http://www.paceparts.com) has it for $7195, and Scoggin-Dickey (http://www.sdpc2000.com) sells it for $7159. Sound like OK deals to me. Couldn't build it for that price!

Laps Jun 13th, 00, 10:40 AM I just called Jim Pace and the Ram Jet 502 won't be available until Jan. 2001! That yellow Chevelle must be using some other fuel injection (maybe off a late model GM?) and the plenum doesn't look anything like the photos I've seen of the pre-release Ram Jet.
Strohm Jun 13th, 00, 2:20 PM I have been drooling over this motor since it was anounced. I figured hood clearance would be a problem. I like the SS hood on my non-SS 67, so I when the time comes, I'll probably go with the carb version.
Has anyone put an LS1 in a Chevelle? I thought that might be a very unique swap.
DaleM Jun 13th, 00, 2:23 PM I could be mistaken then...wouldn't be the first time! I didn't get a chance to talk to the gentleman who owned the car but did overhear him talking about the 502 itself to others and was praising its accolades. I don't know of any other BB injection unit except the Accel that I have. Maybe I jumped the gun and just assumed it was the new Ram Jet from GM (?). The plenum is different from the artist renderings I've seen, but that wouldn't be unusual. I'd be interested to know if it is or not.

Dale great pics pages!!
I think that FI Unit is an aftermarket type. I think Arizona Speed & Marine makes/sells one that looks like that. Not a 100% sure but great pics to look at anyways. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif
As for the Ramjets Super Chevy had a small piece on them in the latest issue. I also heard they are delayed a bit.

DZAUTO Jun 13th, 00, 9:12 PM The Ramjet 350 is supposed to have the nostalgic look of the old time (to you but not to me) Fuelie Vette engines. The plenum does have a similar apperance to the 57-62 Corvette fuel injection units except the new FI has the air intake at the front and the old Rochester FI units had the air meter on the side of the plenum. If I had a way to take and post pictures of the FI unit on my 56 Vette I would. The old units were all mechanical and did not have the wiring/computer components to deal with that the new ones have.
DaleM Jun 14th, 00, 7:39 AM I do stand corrected. I visited the Arizona Speed & Marine site and there is a picture of their TPI unit for a big block ($4150 btw) http://www.dalesplace.com/stuff/bbtpi.gif. I'll correct my page and I apologize for getting hopes up for the GM RAM JET this early http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif

Wes V Jun 14th, 00, 8:26 AM I like the look of the ram-jet 350 (plus it would fit under the hood), but there are a couple questions that I can't seem to get answered.
They say (the magazines and such) that you put it in and just hook up 12 volts. But don't you have to run a high volume fuel pump and return lines?
It's controlled by a MEFI computer. It is not programable and doesn't appear to even have replacable PROM chips. (its a sealed unit intended for marine usage) It doesn't appear that there is a diagnostic port to trouble shoot problems.
If I got one, I'd be looking at using an programable computer to run it!!!!

Dale,
Do you or anybody else know the owner of that fuel injected Yellow 71? I would really like to talk to him about that fuel injection setup. Thanks!
