Well the time has some to change the fluid in the sentra's 5 speed... it's been 160,000 miles since it was changed. Does anyobne know of any product or method for cleaning out a tranny aside from pulling it and R&R'ing it? I would like to flush it out the same way I flush the rad. or oil system, can it be done? And any recomendations on what type and weight of oil to add?
thanks much guys

A tip I got from my Dad many years ago was to remove the radiator cap and drive a Chevy under it and reinstall the cap. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Seriously anything that you pour into it other than the recommended lube could cause a problem. Try just running some clean lube in it for a few miles and drain it and see what it looks like. It may cost a little more but it is sure not to hurt anything. What does the manual say about change intervals?

Well the manual says every 60,000. When the clutch was done our mechanic just did the clutch and didn't do a swap because we needed it done fast and cheap. that was 15,000 ago. I was just wondering if there was a sludge and varnish remover for trannys?

I wouldnt worry about it, you can cause more problems flushing than if you just change the fluid. You just know if you loosen up any residue in there it wont all come out by draining, and then its floating around in the new oil to cause problems later.

I,v done lots of standard trans I have never seen sludge or varnish in any of them.If you feel the need to flush it run some SAE30 engine oil for 50 or 100 miles. Then change it to 80-90 gear oil...FRED

Quadz, I thrashed the ever livin' tar out of a 89 Gep spectrum. Had to replace the clutch after I fried it pushing my gal's Cougar POS to the garage the night before we were leaving to get married.
Anyway at about 120,000 the tranny was shifting a bit rough, like the synchros, and I just threw a can of Slick something or other in it (moly lube ), smoothed it right up
and it ran, and ran, and ran...

Go for a drive until the car reaches operating temp and drain the gear oil then replace with new gear oil. Why are you trying to complicate things.
