Planning on pulling the engine/auto. trans out of my 64 Malibu. Is it possible to remove them as a unit without removing the front end sheet metal/rad support? Any tips on the process! Using a chain block, so will have to roll the car out from under the engine, no room for a cherry picker.

Thanks for any tips.

Yes, you can remove both at the same time. I did my 64 with 283 and powerglide but I had a cherry picker. Remove the radiator and the alt, water pump, pulleys, etc. and you should have no problem.

I just did this last week with a chain hoist in my 20 x 20 garage with a 7'6" high center beam. I have removed many engines/tranmissions using this method and most people disagree until they see me do it. I put the car under the steel beam with the hoist centered over the engine. Undo all the wiring, hoses, etc. Put the car on jack stands all the way around as high as I can get it. Remove all the underneath stuff, motor mounts, cooling lines, torque convertor bolts, but leave the trans mount bolted. Connect hoist to the engine, place a floor jack under trans pan, then remove the bell housing bolts. Lift engine till the oil pan is about even with top of the fenders. Remove trans mount and roll trans on the jack forward until clear of crossmember and lower to floor and slide out from under car. Lower car off jack stands and push out from under engine. Lower engine and put on stand. I can do this myself in less than 2 hours, from hood removal till the engine and trans are out. For you guys with cherry pickers this probably sounds wierd, but when using a hoist in a small garage it is actually real easy. This method also leaves the crossmember in place so that the emergency brake still functions. Except for the envitable coolant spill nothing else leaks out. Since the trans never gets tilted on its end it doesn't create the big red puddle.
A variation of this is to take out the engine and leave the trans in place. Same procedure except I use a length of rebar between the frame rails to keep the trans in place. (patent applied for please send me $5 if using my method) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
