Where were the California cars (the ones with the charcoal canister vent systems)built for 1970? Did both 4-speeds and auto's have the canisters in big block cars?

I have an original 402/350 hp California car with auto (5/70 build date), and it has the charcoal cannister. It was built in Van Nuys. Wish I could be of more help!

I have a '71 convertable from Van Nuys, a '71 Monte from KC and a '72 Malibu from KC. All originally small blocks with autos. All came with the charcoal cannister.

I have an original 1970 Calif car - built in Arlington Tx 3rd week of Jan 1970.

The car is a 396/402 with a TH400 and has the charcoal canister. Also the radiator cover has three stickers on it, the third middle one is yellow.

I beilieve the 4 speeds had the canister as well. Don't believe it was limited to the auto. Will check my Chevelle resto book see if they make any reference to it.

Interesting.. I have a '70 el camino and I never knew where it was originally sold but now I do, since it has the charcoal canister. Good to know.

The easiest way to tell where your car was built is to look at the letter in the middle of the VIN#. A lot of CA built cars were built in Fremont CA, the code for the Fremont built cars will be a Z.

My concern was the 1970 SS cars. Would it be reasonable to have a 1970 SS, built in Atlanta ,equipt with the "california charcoal canister vent system or would all the California equipt cars be built in Calif. i.e. Van Nuys, Fremont? Its my understanding that all 1971 and later chevelles came with the charcoal canister .Thanks Nick 1970 Chevelle SS - Black Cherry, W/S, B.V.T.

I think it goes like this...

All pre-1971 Chevelles did NOT have to have a charcoal canister UNLESS the cars were to be used in CA that had strict air polluction laws.

My '70 ordered by my dad new in '69 was built in Van Nuys, CA, but since it was to be shipped to Nebraska, it doesn't have a canister or any smog equipment.

I find it hard to belive that if you lived in CA and you ordered a Chevelle, it would not have been produced in CA---I mean that seems ridiculous to have plants in your own state and not get a car from one?!!

I believe all 1971 and later vehicles regardless of destination HAD to have the canister because of government mandates on pollution control.
