I went to this guys house today to check out his 'velles, and one is a 70 Malibu conv. It has a chrome strip that runs from the back windows and across the top of the doors and all the way to the front of the car on each side. I was surprised because I've only seen like 2 pics of chevelles like this and it was the first one I've ever seen in person. So what kind of option is this? Was it only available on Malibus? I think it looks pretty sharp, I wouldn't mind doing it to mine...

70 malibus came with the chrome strips, both hardtop and convertible. SS cars did not come with that trim.

Only on a 70. I guess if a person really likes the trim, it could be added to any 70-72 2dr. My 70 Malibu conv came with it, I wish it hadn't.

Nope not rare, just a luxury option. My Malibu had them and if anyone wants them I have them for sale.

Actually, they were STANDARD on Malibus. When my dad ordered the '70 new, he did not order or specify any 'extras' he did not want. These came on the car without be "marked down" on an order sheet.
I've seen stripped down (non-Malibu Chevelles) having these also. I suppose if you raised enough stink during the '70 model year, perhaps the factory would have left these off for you.
It was apart of the extra "flash" in the Malibu trim option. (Remember Malibu is really a trim level option).
The SS is a package based on the Malibu trim level, the minute SS was specified, the SS "over-ruled" some of the Malibu stuff, including these trim pieces.
It was know as "BELT REVEAL MOLDINGS" I believe.
Not rare at, finding them in pristine condition IS rare. Mine are scratched-up http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif
