: Piece of junk SBC??

This may sound stupid but does anyone have a SBC that i can have? Im looking for something simple, no carb, intake, manifolds, valve covers, etc etc, just maybe a complete block with crank, pistons, rods, cam, heads and thats about it. I want this to take apart and look at and learn about. Something that has been sitting for a long time, or something that burns oil or thumps, leaks, pings, whatever is fine. Just dont want something that is broken (broken crank or rods or anything)

Anyone have something like this they are willing to part with please let me know. Thanks.
Jon

I am in currently in the San Francisco bay area for the week (until april 1st.)

Okay, I read your post, and I'm certainly glad you are not calling my beloved small block a "piece of junk", but are just looking for a used motor to take apart.
You might try a wrecking yard, tell what you're looking for (keep in mind that all SBC's are virtually the same inside, even the newer ones), to them it may be junk,
but for me it's the most versatile, cost effective, die hard, high HP, little mouse that ever roared !!!!!!!!!!!

Try some of the pick and pull yards in the east bay, Hayward and Oakland have them, they go for about 100-150 depending if you have a core and what accesories you want. Sometimes you might even find one lying in the parking lot. Try calling some metal recycling yards I live near some and have seen them lying around in the past, you might get one for scrap value. There are some wricking yards off #rd Ave in San Francisco too. Good luck.

If you just want to look, why drag it home. There probably are a couple in the pick a parts that someone has started into. Try goofing around with those.

Wait until PicK and Pull has a half price day, I think you can get them for $50-75.

Pick-A Part is a self service wrecking yard. They are common in Northern California, about 10 in the SF bay area. They have lots of medium aged cars, too old to be in the more expensive yards. The prices are standardized, ex. a 12 bolt posi is the same price as the rear end out of a Nissan Sentra. Rear ends drum to drum $60, Fenders $25, Doors $25, V8 engines $130, Consoles $15-20. Three or four years ago you used to find lots of Chevelle's, Monte Carlo's, and El Camino's now they are getting rare. When they do come in all the good stuff disappears quickly. You pay $1 to get in and see what you can find, they have no list of what they have, what you find is what you get. Most of the time they have crap, sometimes you find a treasure, they are always cheap.

lev,
I believe it's the same thing as the junk yards back east, except you go pull the part off the car with your tools.
Or hire someone at the junkyard (for cheap) as I did here in San Diego.
They dont stock parts on shelves at the place I go to. Everything is still on the cars out back in their huge yards. Just go and
"pick a part"!
Half price on parts for that day.
