View Full Version : will side exit pipes be any quieter than turn downs ? xllr8 Mar 5th, 00, 12:26 AM would there be any noticible difference? Wally Mar 5th, 00, 5:08 AM I think anyone who lust for sidepipes should spend an afternoon in a big block mid sixties vette, driving around then on the super slab. After you hearing recovers tell me how much you like sidepipes http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif The exhaust will be less noisy if you run it out the back, like the factory did. I have a 2 1/4 system on the 71 with Flowmasters, runs out the back. You can have a conversation in the car, what a concept http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif ------------------ Wally Gold #67 67 Malibu "Small Block" second owner 90 SS454 71 Malibu "Small Block" 93 torch red vette(crashed)Bad day at Blackrock! 6 grand in damage! DZAUTO Mar 5th, 00, 6:31 AM Not one single word of what Walley says is an exageration! Its great to hear a car with sidepipes,------------------ as you watch it go by. ------------------ Tom Parsons Black LS-6 Mar 5th, 00, 8:01 AM I owned a 67 vette conv. 427-435hp w/the factory side exhaust and headers for about 8 years. Yes they are much louder than out the back, but boy do they look and sound great. The added benefit is it really cleans up the underside of the car when detailing or doing work underneath. If you're looking to carry on a normal conversation or listen to high quality tunes forget it. I did take a few 300+ mile trips in my vette and it was fine. If this is your daily drive forget about the side exhaust. OrrieG Mar 5th, 00, 3:35 PM My experience with my PU was dumping the pipes down under the body amplified the noise, especially at idle when not moving, because of reverbration from the ground. Fred Ont canada Mar 5th, 00, 5:27 PM What he's talking about is side EXIT pipes not side pipes. They will be louder to you than if the were out the back mainly because they are closer. Turn downs do make them louder do to the sound bouncing off the pavement. You could run them straight out the back if it's quiet your after...FRED ------------------ Professor_SS Mar 5th, 00, 7:39 PM You also might want to check with the state law where you live before you opt for the side dumps. In Maryland they are illegal unless they exit behind the rear most plane of the passenger compartment or were stock on the car. I have side dumps exiting just in front of the rear wheels on my pickup and love them but on the chevelle and the Suburban I have straight out the back duals. It might be cool to have the Cuda style side dumps but I don't need the attention of the local and/or state police, and I find that straight out the back is great for the chevelle. BTW, I can also listen to tunes and talk to passengers while still enjoying the mello V8 rumble. smokumchevy Mar 5th, 00, 11:08 PM Had 2 1/2's flowin thru Rhino's dumpin out the sides just in front of the rear tires on a '69 with a horny 355, they were loud to outsiders but not too bad in the car, and attracted a little too much attention from the man, especially when they pull up beside you at the lights. Now I'm runnin 3" thru 2chamber flowmaster ending at the mufflers just in front of the axles on a probuilt 383 http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif . Spring project this year? = H-pipe and extensions out the rear cause I can't even here my own self talking. Good luck whichever way you go. It all boils down to person choice. ------------------ 69ht383>Smokumchevy TC member#610 Smokum's '69 pics (http://www.cartogra.com/home/ViewMyAlbum.asp?coll_id=199357) xllr8 Mar 6th, 00, 9:40 AM well fred had it right I'm talking about side EXIT pipes;the reason I'm asking is my car came with fuel pump/lines/stuff on/near the differential and the muffler shop wouldn't/couldn't run pipes out. I want to eventually run pipes out the back ,but I'm wondering if side exit will be quieter than turn downs. saulsss Mar 6th, 00, 12:13 PM In a word, yes. My first '68 SS was built big and bad and I ran out side exit pipes and man it sounded great, loud but great! Now older and on my third '68SS (I'll never sell this one... right) have run the pipes out the back with cherry bomb flow masters and cross over and it is very quiet till ya stomp on it, then it sounds great! Whatever turns your crank. ------------------ Chris R Mar 6th, 00, 4:05 PM Not sure on this but I think theres a Flowmaster kit that comes with both style tail pipes in the kit so you can choose. Chris R. 69boo307 Mar 7th, 00, 9:19 AM Heck, my lil' 307 is deafening on the highway, and I have stock iron mani's, 2 1/2" pipes with super turbo's exiting at the rear of the car. At about 75 mph you get this throbbing roar in the cab that you can't talk over. I don't have any exhaust leaks or cracked manifolds creating the noise either! I routinely set off car alarms, and people are always accusing me of hiding a big block behind the 307 badges. it's the orignal block, with 'average' modification. nothing fancy, just a slightly lopey cam. xllr8 Mar 8th, 00, 9:41 PM so are some engines just louder than others ? My friend runs a true 400hp+ sb350 with 2 chamber flowmasters in his 69 chevy p/u ,and that thing is new car quiet inside! David Nafarrete Mar 9th, 00, 5:10 PM Same headers and flowmaster exhaust (3chamber) going from my mild 327 to my current 406... Huge difference!! In fact I am at the same stage as you. I had tailpipes until I got the new tires. Tires hit the tailpipes because they tuck under much more. So I cut them off. I have exiting under the car now. But I need to do something because it is really damn loud. ------------------ Team Chevelle Gold 1965 406 6speed 67RAT Mar 9th, 00, 5:52 PM I drove a 73 nova from lebanon p.a. to datona florida and back,it had L-pipes out the side near rear of the door,I heard that car in my sleep for a WEEK!--67rat |
