I have seen all those ads for these brackets that mount inbetween the motor mounts and the frame, yet I also seem to recall that plenty of people have dropped big blocks right into Chevelles that still had the small block brackets. What gives? Is there any dimensional differences between these brackets, or is it just a strength issue? Does one bracket or the other mount the engine higher or lower?

I don't see it if there is. I have a set of each, put them side by side, damn if I can see it. They sure get big bucks for these things knoked off as well as used. Saw a set on Ebay for $125.

A BB will bolt up to the SB brackets but the engine will be offset to the drivers side. This is because of the location of the pads on the engine being different. This will cause the engine and trans to be out of alignment with the driveline and rearend putting additional stress on the crossmember support and U-joints. It also causes problems with header clearance at the steering, clutch linkage alignment and alignment of the fan with the radiator shroud. June/July 99 Super Chevy had a couple of articles on BB into SB car swaps and the details.
