View Full Version : Exhaust will not clear crossmember

I have a '67 chevelle and am installing a 2.5" Flowmaster exhaust system with 2-chamber mufflers with the delta flow. I am using a set of Hooker Super Comps (PN 2116) and they do not align with the two humps in the crossmember. The collector extention will not even bolt on the headers without hitting t he crossmember. It appears the headers are 23" center to center while the headpipes and crossmember humps are about 21" center to center. I guess the options would be to fabricate a collector extention to clear the crossmember or try to enlarge the crossmember humps. This has to be a common problem with these headers. Has anyone been through this before and how did you resolve the situation? Since this car is not drivable at this time and running it open header to a muffler shop is probably out of the question, it needs to be fabricated in the garage. Perhaps a template of the pipe need to make the transition could be bent at a local muffler shop?

I have a '67 with 2 inch Super Comps, and am running three inch exhaust with no problems at all. I don't have bolt on collectors though, I am running my pipes welded to the headers. One less gasket, but lots of trouble to have to move around.

I too had this problem on my 65 with the flowmaster kit and the Super comps. Luckily I was able to drive my car to the mufler shop with open headers. What I had done was had the collector extensions cut down and had the exhaust welded to the plate that mates to the header. Then the exhaust man bent and slightly flattened the tube to clear the crossmember. I have a pic of how it looks under my car at work which I can post monday if u like.

TimG, thank you for the reply. I saw you had the same problem during a search of the Tech Archives, but I don't remember reading what your solution was for the problem. I'll probably end up doing something similar to your solution with the car still in the garage. My dad and I don't want to disturb his neighbors with a .5 hour cam break-in run on open headers and then drive the car to a shop to have them fabricate an extention without some sort of mufflers on the car. I would buy some of those street legal discs that go directly in the header as a temporary fix until the car could be driven to a shop, but they wouldn't clear either.

If you have time, please post the picture you spoke of in your reply. It will help immensely to get an idea of what needs to be done to make this combo work. I wonder why Hooker hasn't addressed this problem before now by designing the collectors to align with the crossmember indentions? Aren't aftermarket components great? It sure adds extra time to the restoration process and valids the old line "Are we having fun, yet?"

I would like to see the picture. Have not measured the centerline on mine but looks like I am going to clear. I went with the Super Comp 2124 on my 64 because Hooker claimed a drop in fit. I have factory air with a PG and there was no way I was going to hack at the car. Things went in, but this "raise the rear of the engine 2 inches" was bull. Damn near had to remove the engine to get the left one in. The aftermarket alternator attachment bracket that came the kit should be redesigned. Yes the alternator goes on it but the PS bracket does not. Had to drill and mill it to fit.
Hardly wait to see what the Hooker A/C bracket looks like.
Please post your picture. Want to see what the Flowmaster set-up looks like. Buy it from Summit? Part Number?
Thanks
John

take a welding Long welding rod and bend it in the shape you need from center of collector to center of where ever you hook up to (muffler etc.) then take that to the muffler shop that's what my muffler guy does when installing systems he bends custom. if need be reshape it again but generally it works first time.

I had the exact same problem on my 71 with the Hooker Super comps 2116. The pipes had to be crimped near half shut to keep from hitting the crossmember. You think hooker would take care of this as it seems to be a frequent problem with this header ???

I remedied this with a new set of Stainless Steel - Jet Hot coated headers from borla ($$$) along with a matching stainless steel dual exhaust system.

I still have the Hooker Super Comps #2116 that were only on the car for about 1000 miles....anybody interested ?

Here are the pics I promised I would post today. They are kind of big so be patient.

I did use the full flowmaster exhaust kit(FLO-17119) from summit, and Hooker super comp headers that I had Jet-Hot coated.
Hope this helps,
Tim

TimG, thank you for posting the pictures. I see what you did. My situation looks EXACTLY the same as yours. Do you think the flat spot up around the crossmember creates backpressure on the exhaust? I too bought my system from Summit for $199.95 and the two-chamber mufflers were somehting like $74.95 each from Summit since they have the delta flow baffles to supposedly reduce interior resonance without effecting the exterior flowmaster sound.

I dont believe it creates hardly any extra backpressure. I believe all it does is quiet down the exhast system a bit
