I recently pulled my 67 console out for a rebuild. everything is good and looks nice now except my storage latch. it feels real sloppy and the little metal strike deal at the end does not go 100% in like it should. that make is so sometimes i cant get the console open easily if there any way to rebuild these to make them work decent? i can see how to get it apart but i only have one of these and don't want to screw it up. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

Thanks a lot

Mine on my 66 has a pretty strong spring inside. Have you tried WD40 or any kind of cleaner? It might just be stuck.

I'll try to help. I have a 1966 Full Size Chevrolet and had a similar problem with my latch on the center console. The striker was sticking and I had to push down extremely hard on the release button for it to disengage at all. I took the entire mechanism apart but I had extras to take parts from. I cleaned it all up as you did and changed the lock cylinder with another. I also changed the pins in the right order so my key would fit. Another problem may be that the metal piece that is pushing in the striker is worn down so it's not engaging with the release enough to open the door. You can try using a drop of epoxy to add a little space there to help with the engaging. Another item is that the console door may not be perfectly aligned and any little amount our of alignment can also cause this problem. One other thing if you have one in yours in the small spring you can change. If you can't find a replacement, try one from a ball point pen.
Try these items and let me know.

Paul
