: Sound difference between 2.25" and 2.5" tail pipes

I want to replace the Super Turbo mufflers on my car with Flow Master 2 chamber muffs. I want it to sound loud and mean. I am 41, married, 3 sons, and my real car is an Accord. Mid life crisis?

Anyway, the car is a '68 SS with a 468, Hooker Super Comps, 2.5" pipes with a cross over in front of the Super Turbos, 2.25" tail pipes from the muffs to the rear with turndowns under the bumper. The guy who did the system said there would be more torque for street driving with the smaller tail pipes.

If, at the same time I change the muffs, I change the tail pipes from 2.25"to 2.5", will it make a noticeable difference in tone quality, loudness, etc? By the way, the 2.25" tail pipes were not mandrel bent, and have the crimps on the inner radii.

Thanks for any input.

It will be the mufflers, more so than a 1/2in increase in pipe, that will make the difference. But still go to 2 1/2in. My wife, and some other family members, sometimes comment about my not growing up----- F%$& 'um if they can't take a joke. I try to do/give my wife everything she asks for, I'm not out chasing women (rice/5.0 burners, yes) or drinking all night and gone to the golf course all the time or hanging out in the chair with all the ball games. Working on performance projects (I became a hero last night by installing a factory remote trunk release in HER 70 conv), fixing her sewing machine, putting up shelves and helping with dishes and house cleaning keeps my busy and occupied. So I don't hesitate to tell them to get off my back when I light 'um up once in a while. It's not my fault I'm still 17 and trapped in a 57yr old body.

We also have an Accord (86 with 150Kmi), runs great.

Ah, Tom, you sound like me. I'm not as old as you ( no offence!!! ) but I don't really have any bad vices except my car, either. Having said that, my wife is pretty patient with me. I'm allowed to buy whatever I want for the car as long as I make time for other things such as house renovations & decorating, and doing things she likes to do, and all of our bills are paid ( On Time! ). A pretty fair trade off.

My wife keeps accusing me of being in "my second childhood" but I take offense at that and remind her that IT IS STILL MY FIRST!! i HOPE TO NEVER GROW UP. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Yeh, remember, he touched on that at the end of the first paragraph. We just expanded on it because of its importance to Chevelles. Why is it important to Chevelles? Because in many cases, without happy little ladies, some of us wouldn't have a Chevelle, or a Corvette, or golf clubs, or--------------- a pot to pee in! But we WOULD have all the child support payments that we could ever hope to have. So if you want to have a good flowing and sounding exhaust you gotta have a happy room mate.

I'tll be kinda like a pipe organ, The bigger the pipe the lower the note. However the Flowmasters may screw up that fact as they sound kind of tinny to me. I like good ol'e glasspacks mounted as far back as possable for that "rumble the windows and set off the alarms" sound.
With 468 c.i. torque shouldn't be much of a problem, go with 3" all the way back.
Another point is exit location. If you exit to each side you will hear one side mostly.
For that deep stereo sound you need to exit both pipes to the rear.
It's not mid life crisis, It's reaping the rewards of working so many years and finally having some of the things one has allways wanted and very likley deserves.
The one with the most toys wins!!

Hey Gibbons,

I'm runnin 3" through 2chamber flowmaster and straight out at the mufflers behind a radical 383 in my '69Velle. She's deep, load and everyone loves hearin her comin http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif The only thing I plan to do to her is add in an H-pipe to increase some torque and continue the 3" run straight out the back. That way I wont get the echoed whomp of the ground thru the chassis.

Good luck with whatever you do and lets us know how it turn out.

I am runnin 3" out to 1-chambers and have them turned down just as the pipe goes over the rear axle......it sounds so wicked....and it's a daily driver. Mine is a 355 hyd. roller with a tight lobe sep. though. It sounds like a damn freight train....awesome!
It has the same sound as Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" intro....

My 406 with 3" Flowmasters sounds like a B-52 Bomber at treetop level when your on it. Then as I cruise through the neighborhood, all the people are opening their curtains to see if the world is coming to an end as I drive by rattling all their windows. My wife knows when I'm coming home. One good thing about the noise is the kids get out of the street immediately. Parents actually are yelling for their kids to get out of the street before that maniac runs em over. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I went with small pipes on my '56 Chev with a built 283. 1 1/2" headers into 2 1/2" collectors through an X pipe, into generic turbos and out 2 1/4 tail pipes. Sounds like a Winston Cup car coming at you out of turn 2 @ Daytona during qualifying. High pitch that'll make you think it's turning twice it's 8000 rpm.

Different strokes for old folks.

Gibbons,
What you really meant was that your real car is the Chevelle, and the accord is your daily driver, right? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
