: Spare wheel and wheels mounted on car

I have a '68SS with which I was told and what appears to be the original spare tire non DOT red line and wheel (XE). My question is was the spare tire and wheel the same as the other 4 on the car, or could this have come with rally wheels?

Back in those days when you got 5 full size tires, ALL of the cars I have ever seen (including the 72 I ordered new) got ALL 5 wheels/tires the same. Even if you got an optional wheel. BUT, you only got 4 caps, trim rings, etc.

I have the original spare 2 thin white strips F70x14.I don't know why I carry it as it will not fit the front 12"disc brakes...FRED

I was told by the guy I bought my 69 Malibu from that my car came from the factory with the Rally wheels that are the car now. And the spare in the trunk appears to be the original spare and it is on a black standard wheel. I'm not 100% sure though. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

My '69 was originally equiped with 14x6 Rallys painted silver (now has 15x8's). The spare wheel is also a 14x6 Rally (minus ring and cap) and its painted black on the outside and grey on the inside.

I agree with DZ and Brian. My '72 SS had a factory 5-spoke spare.

I bought my 72 SS (5 spoke wheels) form the second owner (first owner was a friend of his) who got the car when it was 2-3 years old. The fact that he was a mechanic at the local Chevy dealer also adds to his knowledge and credibility. My car has a std steel wheel for the spare, and it is painted the body color (factory looking paint). When I bought the car I questioned this, and the guy said some cars came with the optional wheel (minus cap and ring) and others a std wheel, kind of a luck-of-the-draw deal. According to him, the only way to be assured of getting a matching optional wheel for spare was to make sure it was ordered that way, but then you had to pay for it, when plenty of them came that way free. I would imagine this could be like so many other items that seemed to come many ways without rhyme or reason, depends on what factory, and what parts they had on hand.

I know that the 69-70 came with the SS wheel without any extra beauty rings or SS caps. I talked with Dad who ordered a 69 new, black, red stripe down the side, and a red interior, 350hp with an automatic in the floor. I was just looking at pictures they took of it the day they brought it home. Man it would be nice to have a time machine.

I wonder if the above holds true if you ordered the freon-activated collapsible spare?

In my '67 I still have the original spare 7.35-14 rayon whitewall on the original 14x5 wheel that predates tread wear indicator bars. I don't consider it safe, but it looks cool.
