I am starting to gather information to purchase a 1966 or 1970 Chevelle SS. I would like to be well educated before I get serious about buying a car. Can someone recommend the best book for Chevelle SS info such as available options, engine codes, ...
A Chevelle SS should complement my '70 Monte SS very well. I just want to be sure I know what I'm buying. Thanks.

There are several out there. I bought the Cars and Parts Magazine's Catalog of Chevelle, Malibu & Elcamino ID Numbers 1964-87. This was recommended to me by members at this site, and I found it to be VERY informative in my search.

My library is about 150 volumes and still growing. My first book was "Chevrolet SS Muscle Car Red Book" which refer to occasionally. I'd also recommend the '66 and '70 Factory Assembly Manuals and the information packet that Chevrolet offers. You can get this by calling the Chevrolet Customer Servise 800 number. Perhaps someone else has the number handy. I can't seem to come up with it.

I think the number is 800-222-1020. I understand you have to give them the VIN of your car. (haven't done it yet myself. Got to get off my duff! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif)

There are some good books out there I'm sure, the one I bought prior to my purchase this year and last of (1) 1969 Malibu and (2) 1970 SS was the Chevelle SS Restoration Guide. If you have followed this forum for long you will see that there are some major discrepancies in that book. Was good reading till I learned better on this sight.
The best way to educate yourself is by reading all the past posts here. You could read for days (and will) and will have first hand info passed on by some real knowledgable Chevelle people. Good luck and when those questions start to come up as you get more and more serious, post um here.

Desmo,
Just avoid the Chevelle SS Resto Guide with the red '71 drop top on the cover (forget authors name), it's loaded with mistakes and inconsistancies.
I have the Cars and Parts book and it was key in helping me with my purchase.
A very good and accurate book. There are several others, too just look in www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com)
Look over everything as there are some real good clones out there! BTW the 66-68s can be more easily varified as SSs because it is part ofthe VIN, not the case for '69+ unless it was built in Canada where the Z15 and Z25 option is marked on the Cowl tag.
Just check back with us whatever you find- we know it all when it comes to Chevelles!

I've bought books on Chevelles at Books-A-Million. They have a pretty good selection if you have one close to where you live.
