I have been thinking about adding a tachometer to my 72 chevelle malibu. How does a tach hook up to the engine and how hard is it to add one?? Any suggestions on a brand? I was thinking about Autometer.

Thanks,

Install is a piece of cake. Folow the instructions its easy.

I've got Autometer gauges in my '67. They work great and look good too. No problems in the 5 yrs I've been using them.

Nothin' to it. If you have the original points type distributor, just connect the tach lead to the (-) side of the coil. On the HEI units, I believe there is a spade connector that reads "TAC".

Typically there are four wires, usually RED, GREEN, BLACK, WHITE, that was what was on mine (SUN mini-tach).

The BLACK went to ground, RED went to a switched power source--use the IGN terminal on the fuse block so it is only live when the engine is running.

WHITE went to the dial light circuit in the dash, so when you turn on your dash lights the little bulb(s) in the tach also turn on.

GREEN is the wire that receives the info. I mentioned where that goes at the beginning.

Joe,

Autometer is a good choice, I use a 2 5/8" mini tach (#3708) in my Malibu and I'm very pleased with it. This instalation is a breeze, just like the previous posts say. I just wanted to add that you must use a grommet when running the wiring through the firewall (just in case the tach you buy doesn't include one).
