I own a 70 Malibu that I am in the process of rebuilding. I don't want it to be a show car or all original, just a nice good weather driver. It originally had tilt and auto on the column. Does anyone know of other GM columns that would work with no modifications. I would like to change it to a floor shifter. Thanks in advance for any information.

All 69-72 "A" body cars' columns will work (chevelle, skylark, lemans, cutlass) also 70-72 monte carlo and 69-72 elcamino. Only difference between different GM makes is different designs of the stalk knobs, which are interchangable between columns. Some also have a different plastic connector on the wiring harness, but again the wires are removable and the parts are interchangable.

We installed a 1978 Z/28 floor shift, tilt column in my son's 71 Malibu. Used the shaft between the column and steering box from the Malibu. TOO EASY! My floor shift 76 Cutlass with tilt also LOOKS to be the same.

Since the camaro tilt will work, get one of those. They are the same 70-81 and are a dime a dozen, literally 50 bucks or less at swap meets. "A" body tilts will go from 75 up for column shift and 150 up for floor shift models. Think its time to "build" some A body tilts for the next swap meet! Good tip DZ, never heard that one before..

Our guess is that a multitude of members/others have wondered which tilt columns/non-column shifts will interchange into Chevelles/El Caminos without a bigtime hastle.
We have the tilt/cruise/wsw from an '83 Z28 to install in our '69 Ekle frame off resto. We also are going with a floorshift for our GM 4L60. The original '69 was a column/not a tilt. What is required to adapt the 2 columns together?
By the way, we are also using the complete guage cluster w/tach. This is going to compliment both the column and the dash (I will have to design a surround).

Any info also greatly appreciated.

While we are on the subject, I need to throw something out there for the column gurus.
While at the last Chickasha, Okla swap meet, I saw an excellent floor shift, tilt column. then I looked at the end of the column where the intermediate shaft attaches. Instead of a splined shaft and clamp connection, this column had 2 flats. NOT COMPATABLE WITH early Chevelles. The guy said it was a 79 Camaro column. Does this mean that 78-earlier had splines and 79-later had the 2 flats? I think this needs to be determined, because if you have a perfect 80 Camaro tilt column and go to install it in your 69 Chevelle, that's not the time to discover they won't connect together.
Who has the answer out there?

Tom, Just get the matching intermediate shaft, the steering box end will be the same.

If I remember right, the camaro columns will fit, but they are not externally identical. The difference is slight, but noticeable. I do not have time to explain the difference, but if you set them aside an original chevelle/monte column, it will be different. This is the same for the mid 70's nova columns!
Also, not all A-bodies (70-72) are the same, although they will work, but again a column our of a pontiac or buick, will be externally different.

What I have noticed, is that '73-75 Monte carlo tilts are almost exact with the exception of the knobs and the easily swappable stuff (ignition switch also). The shafts to the steering box is also a perfect fit!

My opinion when it comes to having a floor shift, is to remove the auto lever and then shave off the knuckle and grind to the general contour. Then stuff the remaining hole with a piece of sponge and use some body filler to blend it in! Viola, you have a floor shift column and 99.9% of the time no one will notice, unless they know exactly what to look for.
