: '68 vs '74 radiator

I really hate to bother everyone with something so trivial, but it's some info I can't get 100% either way. Basically, in my '68 Chevelle right now I got a '74 400. I also have the radiator from it, a 3-core. This past weekend I noticed that it seemed taller than the other. What I need to know is if this is the same radiator I would get if I was to get the heavy duty, 3-core radiator made for say a '68 327. It occured to me today that the old one I had in there could have been a wrong size radiator. This one sticks about an inch above the top of the radiator support. The other one I had was even height-wise with the radiator support. This one seems like it's not much lower than the closed hood. I found somewhere that it looks like both the '74 3-core and the '68's v8 3-core are both 16 1/8 inch tall. If it's the wrong radiator I'm prepared to buy a new one, but I would really like to know if this is actually the correct size to use in the '68 Chevelle.

I think the above may sound confusing. What I need to know is what the size of the '68 heavy-duty 3-core(same as used for the big blocks) radiator, and if possible would the 3-core radiator for a '74 chevelle 400 be the right one to use in a '68 Chevelle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OX68, I just looked at the Modine catalogue and both of the rads you mention are exactly the same demensions, the difference is in the trans cooler size, that is, for the heavy duty cooling, 3 row rad. Hope this helps.

Ok, then it was correct that both radiators are the same size. What boggles my mind is I looked at some of the cars in the feature section('68s & '69s), and the top of their radiators seem to come even height-wise with the radiator support in front of it.
On mine, the radiator top support plate is bent at a 25 degree angle so it can meet the top of the radiator support, thus bending the top of the radiator support some.
If anyone can shed some light on this mystery plz speak up http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Found out something new, but it's probably the same old story that's happened to lots of people.
Come to find out this radiator isn't the same size as the standard '74 and '68 3-core radiator. Those are 16 1/8 tall, this one is 17 1/8 core size. I'm ordering a new 16 1/8, which solves the problem of the radiator sitting too high. Course, the guy didn't even fully tighten the alternator belt. Go figure, but glad this dilemma with the radiator is over. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
