Check it out - this one belongs to a friend of mine, and I was finally able to take a close look at the car and the build sheet. Yes, it is real, and the build sheet photocopy has not been doctored.

Cowl tag (http://www.geocities.com/rseitzx/70400SOcowltag.jpg)

Left front (http://www.geocities.com/rseitzx/70400SOlfront.jpg)
Right rear (http://www.geocities.com/rseitzx/70400SOrrear.jpg)
Left rear (http://www.geocities.com/rseitzx/70400SOlrear.jpg)
Passenger side (http://www.geocities.com/rseitzx/70400SOside.jpg)

So what's so special about this car? Well, for starters, it was factory-ordered with an LS3 big-block. Big deal, you say, Rainer's just partial to them because he owns an LS3. True, but have you ever seen an LS3 in a standard (i.e. non-Malibu) Chevelle? Yes, this is not a Malibu, its style number is 13437, which is a Chevelle (Standard) sport coupe. That means no drip rail moldings and upper body moldings, no Malibu nameplates on the fenders, a rubber floormat (no carpet) and standard black interior (code 752). But it gets better. Note the paint code in the cowl tag picture (two dashes), and the ZP3 option on the build sheet, noting Special Paint. This car was ordered with Hugger Orange paint and black stripes, and is still wearing its original paint! But the owner didn't stop there. Check out what else was ordered on this car:

F41 suspension
3:31 posi rear
power disc brakes
M20 4-speed
Tach & gauges
heavy duty radiator
etc.

This car sounds like it was set up to go, but on a budget. In my opinion, this car is actually the predecessor to the Heavy Chevy. It was based on the same body style, and came with the same standard interior. How cool! Maybe seeing cars ordered like this is what gave Chevrolet the idea in the first place.

Now if it was only in a little better shape...

Rainer,

I really like the special order one-off Chevelles. I tried for 4 years to buy a sweet '70 in Los Angeles. It was all original, a little rough, but had some cool options--L48 350, M20, F41, 3.31 posi, cruise, fiber optics, buckets, console, tach/gauges, triple black. The original owner still drove it every day! He said that it was a factory demo car.
So what are the plans for that '70? Is it someone's project?

The car was drag-raced in the Portland area back in the 80's, possibly the 70's as well. The previous owner traded my friend for a less rusty 70. He was not aware that it was so unusual. My friend restores Chevelles, and at this point he's toying with the idea of building the car for himself. Unfortunately, he's so busy that the car will probably end up just sitting.

By the way, that sounded like a really neat 70, Tony!

Rainer, that is an interesting car. On the build sheet what is the code above the ZP3? What are the numbers on the lower left where the 1001 is? I have seen 1001HA and 1001AA on some 1969 build sheets with special paint. thanks

One rare puppy going there! Thanks for sharing! Tell your friend thanks as well...
You say he restores chevelles? I couldnt tell from the pictures whatsoever.. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif just messin' but the pictures did peak my interest quite a bit. Just how many chevelles/elcaminos does your friend have? I musta counted at least a dozen of em just taking a glance at the pictures of the LS3! I thought my parts hookup at my local parts store had quite a few(69 chevelle restored, 65 wagon restored, 64 elky parts gatherer, 65 300 deluxe awaiting restoration, and a 67 wagon which is his daily driver rolling restoration) but I think your buddy has him beat! Sorry, rambling, Thanks for sharing!!

That is a rare one.
On my production totals poster ( http://www.DesignsComputed.com ) I show 47 '70 non-Malibu LS3 cars, 16 of those with a manual trans (M20). These are both estimates, however.

I like the scenery as well, many Chevelles in the background (and a famiiar 4dr). Good catch on the LS3 though.

Rainer, my first '70 SS (4 years ago) was painted a Teal color when I bought it. The cowl tag had no paint code, like this car. One knowledgable guy told me that meant it was factory ordered with either Hugger Orange or Daytona Yellow - which are both my all-time favorite colors. But I never did understand why it couldn't have been yet a third, non-rpo color, as well. I didn't repaint it, since it wasn't a matching #'s car anyway. But I finally have my yellow Chevelle, now - even if it isn't a '70 !!

Chev-hell - got it, thanks.

Coppertop - sent ya an email

RatTrap - was it the condition of the car or the way it was optioned that didn't thrill ya? If you like one-of-a-kind factory sleepers, ya gotta like this one.

Joe58 - the code above the ZP3 is ZK8 - tire pressure label. And as Clill indicated, its 1001PA on the lower left.

Steve D - There are another 8 cars in his shop undergoing various phases of restoration, but they are customer cars. He's got a few more parts cars and Montes as well, 6 of which I picked up for him http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Dan - thanks for the numbers. I finally ordered the poster, and one for my buddy as well.

Gene - I thought you might recognize that one. Its looking much better with a new fender and some different wheels.

Stan - I saw a pic of your 71 - it looks sweet! Looking forward to seeing it in Graham in August. By the way, did you make it there this year?

You should see some of the stuff that is in that shop. The red 67 is awesome(big motor big brakes lotsa powder coat). My pro street 68 body came from this guys collection of projects. I spend way too much time out there when I am in Portland for Air guard duty.) I hope some day Jim does get that car done. I lkie just standing in the shop looking at the parts http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif.....

Sean,

I actually only live about 40 min from Salem east out Hwy 22 then south towards Lebanon. Went to Schlotskys a few times over the summer. Probably more next. Gotta get my ride(68 SS) repaired, maybe paint the Camaro(and give that yellow 69 "SS427" a run for his money) or start in on the Pro Street. That's pretty killer garage duo you got yerself http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif. I promise though I don't speed through your jurisdiction http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif.

Ha ha! Highway 22 is my turf http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I'll be looking for ya now.

I hope to see some of your rides at the cruise in this summer then. Maybe we can con Gene into showing up as well.

The yellow one in the garage is going pro street eventually, but I'm definitely running her at Woodburn this summer.

RatTrap's getting jealous http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif It starts in late April or early may, as I recall from previous years. Never paid much attention. Sorry we wandered from the original topic, Rainer.
