I was just looking throught the OPG cataloge and several other chevelle parts books today, and I noticed that you can by reproduction tail lenses for almost all chevelle years except for the round 71-72 style...Are these rare "junk yard only" items??? If so, how can I freshen up the faded lenses that are already on my car???

Good question. I wondered that myself just a few months ago. No reproductions are available yet (to my knowledge, which is rather limited). To "refresh" your current lenses, just take some 0000-grade steel wool (Scotchbrite works good, too) and buff the color back into 'em. Then, just shoot 'em with some clearcoat. I just did this whole process (which takes about 15-20 minutes for all four) about a week and a half ago. They came out pretty good. If this doesn't work, there are a lot of guys on this site that have an extra set, so ask around. Good luck!!

The lens themselves are available, in many cata1ogs; National Parts Deport for one----800-874-7595. There about $31.25 each. The problem I find is the stainless trim that goes around the rear lens. Mine is a 71 elky and the bezels are pitted and the black is washed out. Haven't seen them anywhere.

71 elky,

The tail lights for elky's are different than the chevelles, and the chevelle doesnt have the trim rings around the lense.

Thanks,

The rumor is that these are not available. However, I checked some catalogues and found that Muscle Factory has a part number for these lenses(one part number for both left and right!) which is LT102. For the price they say "call". So maybe they get some NOS stuff and price it accordingly.
To follow up you could call them at:
800-762-0317
I have parts car that has all the lenses, but they are only so-so. If your are desperate, contact me. (Same line I use with women that I meet.)So far, no takers!

Hi Joe,about the lenses,i myself was looking through all catalogs for taillight lenses, but found none.I contacted a small supplier which told me no one makes them yet.
So i went shopping and found a guy in Niagara Falls,on the Canadian side, and bought them off him.I was lucky and got a good set for, would you belive it..35$!And that included a 8,5$ sending cost to Iceland!
Well,i am sure you can find a good used set for 20-40$,just try the part pages here on Team Chevelle http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Good luck,

Joe

If Doug can't help you out, lemme know. I have some extra ones for you.

ARe they the round stile? Or the square ones like on '72s??

I have two reverse light (clear center) ones and one for the right tail-light. I had to use the left one to replace my broken one.
If you need to compare quality (looks), I can e-mail you a picture.

DOUG-- The Salvage yard I went to and got my 12 bolt had a set of four of the circular lights. He said "$50", I said how much for one, he said "$50" http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif I found my extras from a guy in town w/ a 71 and a 72

Joe,
Do a search on e-bay. I found a complete NOS set for my 71, even though mine are fine. I have seen them on there pretty regularly.

I just bought a nice set of lenses complete with housings for $25.00 off Ebay. I've seen some go for quite a bit higher. If you find some and the bidding price starts to get a little too steep, wait a week. Another set will pop up for sale.

72Chevelle,

What type of clearcoat did you use on your lenses, and could I use a very fine grit sandpaper instead of steel wool???
Also, how do I go about removing the tail light assemblies from the bumper?? Do I have to take the bumper off??

Doug,
That would be great if ya had some spares you could sell me. I would love to make the trip to Jasper to buy them and meet a fellow chevelle addict.... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Doug & JOe,

Hey Great to hear from some "locals", remember there are malibu lenes and chevelle lenses and there is a difference mid-year in '71-72. I have a set of the chevelle lens for a 72. Looking for a early 71 malibu (SS) set that has the small domes and chrome rings in center, any suggestions. Joe stop at my place on the way to Doug's I'm about half way between you guys in Acworth. Almost finished with a frame up 71 SS454.

The round lenses I have on the back of my Malibu have a chrome ring seperating the center white (backup light) from the red surrounding. Are these "SS" lenses.

They are just collecting dust if ya want 'em

I have a pair of outers with the chrome center rings, but no reverse ones. They have a silver painted outside on them, but the ones on my Malibu don't have this silver paint. They may be S.S. ones, who knows? Combined with Mike's pair, there is you a complete set!

I had another set, but U.P.Sed them to a guy out west who had his stolen off his car. He promised to pay me something for them, but I haven't seen any funds yet! Maybe he is reading, and this will jog his memory! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

All the 71/72 lenses I have seen have a chrome ring in the middle.

There were 2 different ones however. One had a small ring and the other had a larger ring. Here's the part numbers and descriptions of them. (I just copied and pasted from my classified ad to make it easier)

(2 sets) 1971-72 Chevelle tail light lenses-part #'s 5964504, 5964503, 5964507,
5964508-(these have the small chrome ornament-2 1/2" center ring) $50.00/set of 4

(1 set) 1971-72 Chevelle tail light lenses-part #'s 5963427, 5963428, 5963436 3,
5963436 2-(these have the large chrome ornament-3" center ring) $50.00/set of 4

These are still available if anyone is interested.

Bob, there are some that don't have the rings. I had a set, and I think they came off a base Chevelle. Most I have seen have the rings though.

Doug, I think you're right. I just picked up a base Chevelle (13437...) and it does not have the stainless steel rings.
Since the Heavy Chevy is off the base car platform, would the Heavy also have the plain lenses? Would fit in line with the de-chromed look of a Heavy.
