: Mesh package tray - 1970 - anyone have one on their car?

I note in some catalogs they sell mesh package trays for car equipped with factory installed speakers. It seems, as I have read, that factory installed rear speakers would have received mesh package trays. Dealer installed rear speakers would have the hardboard package tray with speaker grills.

Was wondering if this is indeed the case and if anyone has the factory setup.

Okay,

This is FALSE, factory speakers had grills, they were installed in the regular package trays. If you ever find an un-touched original car (like my dad's that is now my project) when you pull the tray out, the jute under it is pre-cut out for the speakers. The factory just knocked the jute pading out of the predetermined squares. Speakers went under, and the grills peg's poked thru and held the speakers.

The "mesh" is what I'm going to put in my '70 as I'm working on a very hidden and stock looking (but not sounding!) audio system. People will just assume I have no rear speakers, but in reality high-power 6X9s will be hiding under the mesh.

Thks Joe,

If I can't find an original set of speaker grills I will go mesh as well, besides I am not to thrilled on cutting my original un-cut package tray. Even if I do find grills, I'll probably use a repro tray so not to cut mine.

By the way I sent you an e-mail - was the price I paid too high for the radio? Probably was - I just hope it's as good as the guy stated.

Hey Rich,

What kind of radio did you buy? I just purchased an AM/FM 8 track and got it working tonight. Very cool!
My 70 SS had the UM1 AM/8 from the factory. The rear speakers have rectangular perforated grilles with studs. I wish I had a picture!
My girlfriend bought me an old Burt Reynolds 8 track last year (as a joke, of course). I played it tonight for the first time. Pretty scary!

Rich, I'm going to email a couple of pictures on my mesh package tray, decide for yourself. All of the comments I've gotten so far are great. There are a few things about my car that are not 100% "correct", (I put a tape deck in it, just like I would've done 20 years ago, but now I keep the old radio), but the mesh package tray sure looks factory to me.

Jon,

Got the pics, thks - the tray does look great. If I can't find orig speaker grills, I'll go the mesh route, thks.

Tony,

I purchased a 1970 AM/FM stereo radio model #01bfm1 - no 8 track. Found it on E-bay. I just sent the guy the check this week, I hope it's as good as the guy said, I spent $300.00 for it with the knobs and complete harness. Currently the car has it's original AM radio with two front speakers in the dash. I was torn on making the swap, my wife even gave me some grief on changing the original radio, but I can't listen to AM when I'm driving. So I am trying to make the swap with all original items that would have been there if the car was ordered that way.
