Does anyone know of a GM radio from a later year than '69 that would be an AM/FM with or w/o casette that would fit my '69 dash opening? I don't hold much hope of finding an original and would like having the casette as an added bonus.
Thanks,
Rich

I've never had the "honor" of trying it, but coming across many radios, it seems that GM continued utilizing the same or very similar control knob bushing spacing and depth for several years. On Chevelle radios one will notice that the tuning bushing (the part that gets "bolted" to the dash)is pushed farther back then the volume control bushing--this is important to consider. I believe some Delco's still used this format until the early 1980's!

Look at 1976/1978 and up radios and take some measurements. The hardest part about the later years is mounting the rear of the radio as later radios were still bulky, but don't have the attachments in the right places--this is where some "time to build your own parts" comes into play.

Also if you don't want to hack the dash make sure the dial can be seen and the pushbuttons on later radios clear the factory radio cut out, as some of the more recent radios had more room to "see" in the dashs of the later 70's cars.

If you find one that gets the job done, please let me know for future reference.

For original stuff though, 1970, 1971, 1972 am/fm should fit, they are the same basic design, however the some, such as the 70-72 am/fm mono units have a bulkier heat-sink assembly in the rear that may cause clearance problems with heating ducts, connectors, etc.

Also, In '71 came the color change to light blue illumination, so the '71-72 radios light up blue and have white numbers.

Also http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif the later radios require 4 speakers with UNGROUNDED speaker wiring to prevent output circuit damgae.

P.S. Try as recent as a 1982 Impala AM/FM, and if not work backwords in model years and you might get lucky.

You didn't mention Custom autosound? They advertise "custom fit radios for classics". Is there a problem with them? just curious. Thanx

I think that Kustom Autosound is not a GM product.

Although not original GM, there are several aftermarket radio companies that make radios to fit and with GM logos or a bowtie emblem on them. I know, I know most of you already knew that but just thought i'd say it anyway http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I had no luck finding a stereo to fit in my 68's dash, so I put everything (cassette, amp, changer controls) in the glovebox on a shelf I made, put a cd changer in the trunk, and bouhgt a 1968 vette 8-track at a swap meet that didnt work for $10. It looks factory fresh and I still have a nice stereo. Most importantly.... It keeps punks from trying to break for a stereo, because all they see is the 8.
Hope it helps

I heard both good and bad things about the Custom Autosounds radios. I've never had one so I honestly don't know. All I can say is do your homework and ask around (like any other product before you buy it). And remember you get what you pay for, so it might be better to spring for the nicer model than the "bare bones" basic radio.

Thanks for the replies all, I'm still checking around, but if anyone has found a radio from a later GM car that fits, please let me know.
Thanks,
Rich
