: Ideas for new exhaust on my 454SS
71ss454droptop Nov 6th, 00, 10:15 PM Looking or recommendations on systems with x-pipe, that exit out the rear for my 71 454SS.
Want a mellow but mean sound, not too loud.
What systems have you guys, and gals, put together that really make those Chevelles sound like they mean business ????
I'm thinking stainless possibly......
Thanks...............
gibbons Nov 6th, 00, 10:29 PM Our 68 with a 454 had 2.25" tail pipes exiting the rear with Super Turbo muffs. It was too quiet and sputtered. So I put on a FlowMaster American Thunder system, 2.5" pipes and three chamber mufflers. Nice sound, but still too quiet. So I got the FM tailpipe kit with two chambers (ala carte purchase). Ah, much better. It sounds great, and is not too loud. Another Chevelle guy, Mr D, has ridden in it and I think he will concur that the sound is just right with two chambers.
But remember, my current system exits at the stock location under the bumper. I have heard two chamber Flows dumped in front of the rear axle, and found them to be too loud.
The FlowMaster stuff bolts in perfect. I have digital pics, if anyone is interested.
Mytmouse Nov 7th, 00, 10:33 AM If you are looking for a different sound than the Flowmaster type set-up, the guy that I think may be able to assist in the recommendation is Gene (a.k.a 427L88). Maybe he will see this and respond. Also I think he is in NY somewhere and maybe you could hear his system. If I remember correctly he has headers with "X" pipe configuration into Magna Flow mufflers.
On my 67 Stock 396, I have 2" headers into 3" exhaust pipes (no "X" pipe) into SS Magna Flow mufflers also with 2.5" out the back. This is why I kind of remember Gene having the Magna Flow mufflers because he was the first one other than myself that I had ever heard tried them. I am sure there is a little different sound on his with an L88 forcing the exhaust through the system, but I like the sound of mine because it is different than the Flow Master sound. Don't get me wrong, I like the Flowmaster sound and have it on my 68 Z/28, but when it came to putting a new exhaust on the 67 I decided to try something different. I think these mufflers can only be purchased through muffler shop dealers so if you intend to do it all yourself, this may pose a problem.
The sound is a deep mellow tone at cruize and normal speeds but when I put my foot into it, it crackles, http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif (and I mean crackles ) to life. My Buddy was driving his 68SS with a crate LS6 (on steroids 537 HP) with a fairly loud Flowmaster system on it, when I jumped on my 67 in front of him. He told me my car sounded really http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif. I like it cuz it is loud when I want it to be but deep & mellow most of the time.

On my '71 SS w/468 BBC, Hooker Comp. coated headers, Flowmaster 3" exhaust kit, and Dynomax Hemi super turbos exiting in stock location out back just below bumper. Has a nice mellow tone at idle or cruise, but changes to deeper rumble when you get on it. I wanted something that was pretty quiet and stealthy at idle and low speeds to keep neighbors happy and try and fool those 5.slows into a race. It didn't quite work as anyone with any experience knows a BBC over a SBC just by the pitch of the exhaust. Since I don't have the SS454 badges on my car, I still have fun with the Rustangs around here. Kinda just depends on what you want, but I would suggest you try and find some examples to actually listen to, that is the only way to know for sure.
