: Late Build date

I have a 1970 Chevelle SS396 built in the Atlanta plant. My Vin shows it was built in the thrid week of December 1970. Was this Chevelle built late in the year because of a strike or did they build the same model right up to the end of the model year?

Mr SS are you an NCOA member? Mark Meekins is looking for that very information to certify those early and late production cars out of every assembly plant. My old 66 was just certified prior to it's sale two weeks ago as it was a Third Week April out of Atlanta built car. Nice Certificate! Sorry, I don't know the answer to your specific question.

I find it very, very hard to belive you have a '70 built in December 1970! By this time the plants would be heavily in production of the 1971 Chevelles. It should probably be 3rd week of December 1969. Also, what do you mean by VIN, all the VIN indicates is:

The style of the vehicle, The letter indicating the assembly plant, and the sequencial # of the individual vehicle from that plant.

Your cowl tag is probably what you meant, located under the hood by the driver's side on the top of cowl. It would say 12C, as in 3rd week of the 12th month (December).

If you have a build sheet, you can find the exact date your car was built.

I thought i was the only one wanting to know this maybe not.I have a 70 ss 396 with build sheet my build date on my build sheet is 43-11-19 and my cowl tag is 11C. Mine is either very early or late also.I would love to know for sure.

Brian, I just answered your question earlier (your tail light post). Your car was built on 11/19/69, not 11/19/70.

Okay everybody, think about it. That late in the year means the car was being produced for the new model year, example, late 1969 means brand new 1970 models were rolling off the assembly lines. Had it been late (November) of '70, new 1971 Chevelles would have been rolling off the assembly lines.

Same way today, even though it's 2000, as soon as August, we'll be seeing 2001 vehicles on show room floors.

SOOOOOO, both of you guys have early production vehicles like mine ('70 built on 11/14/69 with parts dated as early as September 1969)

Hope this helps.

Joe

Would I be able to tell by the Cowl what year the car was made. The cowl has A-for Atlanta followed by 13949 12D
If that helps any. I haven't yet been able to locate a build sheet.

You can tell if its Dec 1969 or 1970 by the vin no. the 69 will have a low production no. and the 70 will have a high production no.

12D is December 4th week of 1969.
There would not have been any 1970 cars still being built in December of 1970.

I have a Atlanta 1970 13637 built sheet that has a A19658 on it and it was built 01-15-1970.

The earlist I have is A02239 built 10-09-1969. So it looks like production started in August or September for Chevelle's.

HI GUYS, you must remember that GM car building year and the normal year do not run concurently, that is our year runs from janurary to december. GM car building year starts in september of one year and ends in august of the next year. So the first 1970 chevelle was actually started the first of september 1969 and the last of the 1970 chevelle were in finished in august of 1970.

MrSS, Is that second number 75, or 755 or 756, one of these should show black interior depending your style of seats.

The second line on my Cowl reads TR 756 (Bucket Seats) B80 B90 75 75.
I'm not sure what the B80 and B90 mean?

Mr SS- Your car is an Atlanta built car, yes?? (VIN on dash has an "A" as the 7th digit)
The B80 and B90 codes do not apply to the '70 SS, why they are on the tag are a mystery to me.
B80-This is the code for the chrome on top of the fender and door on a Malibu,
B90-Window frame chrome trim- The coupe has no window frames!

Dave,

The B80 according to Chevy RPO lists is Roof Drip Molding. That would have appeared on the SS as well as all Malibu's.

Hey Coppertop,I don't think august was eary enough for everybody. I saw a 2001 ford explorer sport last week at a dealer! Did'nt look bad as they changed the body a little. The 4 doors won't come out untill summer.
