: Cowl Induction Problem
Jarret Grathwol Nov 6th, 00, 2:29 PM So, finally got the hood adjusted right- was about 1/2 inch out of wack on one side. Now lays perfectly flat.
Now the CI flap won't work when the hood is shut as the vaccum line from the carb to the vacuum actuator on the bottom of the hood is being crimped by the hood and the cowl/firewall.
If you open the hood the flap works fine. I can't seem to be able to re-route the hose and make it work. Do i need to cut a hole in the firewall? There are two holes in the firewall screens- is one supposed to be for the CI hose?
Any suggestions on where it should be?

Big James 4XL Nov 6th, 00, 2:46 PM Don't cut any holes in the firewall! There's a dimple in the hood towards the passenger side that is for the vacumn hose. The dimple should be between two holes where a plastic retainer fits to hold the hose in place.
I didn't use the internal electric flapper on mine and I routed the hose through the hole(about 1")where the electric solenoid goes and I've never had any problem. Hope this helps

DZAUTO Nov 6th, 00, 5:15 PM NO! Don't cut any holes in the firewall! By firewall screens, do you mean the 3 plastic screens that cover the holes for air intake for the heat/air that are on top of the firewall? If so, the center screen (grill) will either need to be removed or have to be modified with a larger hole to compensate for the vacuum pod. But don't cut any holes in the firewall.

67SS509 Nov 6th, 00, 8:19 PM Are the reproduction vacuum pods bigger or something than the factory originals? The reproduction one on my 71 will not clear the middle screen. Or is the problem in the pod bracket?

According to all my literature and original pictures cowl induction Chevelles did not come with the cowl grills.I don't use them on mine and seen many concourse cars without them.

chev-hell Nov 6th, 00, 8:40 PM when i hooked mine up, there was a hole in the firewall, that i assumed was for the vac. line, it was the perfect size and didn't look like it was drilled, but made there.

Jarret Grathwol Nov 7th, 00, 12:20 AM Yes, the three screens are there. They look like they should be there and the one on the drivers side has the holes, but the screens are behind the firewall and there would need to be a hole there regardless if the screens were there or not.
What would be there in place of the screens? I don't think it would look right without them, just 3 open holes? Besides the center screen is indented to make room for the vacuum pod on top of the hood-looks like it was made that way
Does anyone have pics of how it should look??

Jody1970 Nov 7th, 00, 4:05 AM Jarret,
I have a 70 SS with a factory functional cowl induction hood. Everything is GM and my hood lays perfectly flat. My car has the cowl vent screens and the Vacuum pod clears fine. Sounds like you have an aftermarket pod that is a little different that the original. I have a extra GM Pod that is in great condition if you want to give it a try.
When I got my car it did not have the screens so I added them only to find out later that they were not supposed to be there. I like the way they look so I left them but technically they are incorrect for a functional hood.

Sounds to me like you may have your vacuum pod mounted backwards. The vacuum hose tube coming out of it should point towards the engine compartment. I have noticed that the replacement vacuum pods tend to have this tube at a different angle than the originals. I had to bend mine slightly to miss the firewall.
67SS509 Nov 7th, 00, 7:19 PM I have searched and searched thru the factory assembly manual and can't find anywhere stating the screens are omitted on induction cars. Does anyone else with an original car agree that the screens were omitted?
ken70ss396 Nov 8th, 00, 4:55 PM I have an original car, S.S. 396 . We purchased the car from the original owner in 1977. I just added the 3 Cowl grill inserts, but none were there for the last 23 ( maybe 30)years. I've been told that they didn't come with them ,and can't find them in any assembly manual , but I'm leaving them in cause it gives it a finished look. Jarret, Big James was right. There's a dimple in the hood for the hose and a plastic retainer strap Part # 2977025 that pushes into two holes in the hood to hold the hose. The actuator inlet tube points towards the passenger side.

markcord Nov 9th, 00, 6:22 AM Yep, my 70 didn't have them either and I added them also. I agree with Ken that they do give a finished look, but mainly I put them in because I got tired of pulling out the leaves and acorns and such that always seem to get stuck in there.
