: Build Sheet Hunting...

I'm going to go build sheet hunting in my 1970. I found the sheet for my '71 under the rear seat. Where have you folks found them? In other words, where should I look for it?

Thanks

Sean,

I myself own a 1970 and unfortunately I have not been able to locate my build sheet. I have read lots of threads about where to look and have been to all of these spots with no luck. I hope you have better look than I have had.

1st look under the back seat bottom (this seems to be the most common place to find it.) It would be between the springs and the material backing. if that doesn't work try under the carpet, under the carpet padding, in the front seat (stuck up in the springs), inside the doors (remove the door panels), on top of the gas tank.

My car was built in Arlington, and Arlington cars seem to not contain build sheets as much as other manufacturing plants. It was totally up to the manufacturing plant as to whether they wanted to stick one in the car or not.

Hope you find it.

Sean,

I found my build sheet glued to the back of the passenger side door panel. Have not located any others. 70 Chevelle SS built in Atlanta. Good Luck!

In my 1971 Chevelle I found my build sheet by chance..I was adding under dash lights and was tracing where the wire for the dome light was..and opened the pillar post on the drivers side..and there it was..just like the day it was put there..in great condition..

Good Lord! There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the places the various factories put those suckers.

Baltimore cars seem to always have them under the seats. If you can get to them before the mice! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Shannon: Do you mean the post cover on the side of the windshield? I never heard of one there before. Interesting. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I found mine under the back seat folded between the seat frame edge and the fabric. I would have to remove a wire ring to get it out. It looks very brittle so I've left it alone. Could there be another build sheet in the car somewhere else? Has anyone found two in the same car? I would love to get mine out and make a copy of it and put it back but would hate to destroy it.

I just parted out a '70 4-door sport sedan built in Baltimore. The build sheet was taped to the back side of the drivers front door panel.

This question has come up several times here. Maybe we need a permanent place in the resto shop for a list of possible build sheet locations.

My '71 (Los Angeles plant) has 4 build sheets, found in these locations:

In the glove box (talk about easy ! This one still had the extra paper strips along the sides with the holes for the printer feed - I think it may have been presented to the original buyer by the dealer).

Above the front seat springs (driver's side, buckets).

Behind a door panel.

Above the gas tank.

I've also found build sheets in these locations (other cars):

Under the carpeting.
Under the rear seat.
Above the glove box (inside the dash).

I've also heard of these locations:

Behind a kick panel.
In the seat backs (front or rear).
In the trunk.
Above the headliner.
Between the inner/outer fender.
Behind the windshield post padding.
Under the package shelf.

Dan:

Why would your car have four build sheets? I've never heard of there being four in a car.

My car had four build sheets (Kansas City). Two were handed to me when I bought it, so I don't know where they were found. I found another one on top of the gas tank, and another in the rear seat springs.

I found 2 in my 70 SS. One was in the glovebox (easy), the other was stuck to the back of the passengers side door panel where it still remains. My car was built in GA.

Mines a Kansas car, so hopefully I'll find one yet!!! It would really make my day if I could find exactly what the original options were. Sucks having to speculate whether this is proper or that is proper.

I think every car literally has dozens of build sheets. Weather or not any of those actually ended up in the car is another question. Suppose you work on the assembly line and your job is to install the carpeting. You have a stack of build sheets at your station, one for each car coming down the line. As each car arrives at your station, you look at the corresponding build sheet (you know exactly what box to look at - you don't care about all the other boxes). This tells you what color/type of carpet to install. So you have the sheet in your hand and you grab the carpet. You have to work fast. What do you do with the build sheet ? Sometimes you throw it in the car and lay the carpet over it. Sometimes you drop it on the factory floor. Once the car has passed your station, you no longer have any need for the build sheet, so you have no reason to save it. Sometimes (as in the case with my '72 El Camino) the build sheet ends up in a different car than the one it was for. This same scenario is played out at many of the assembly points along the line.
