It has a lot to do with what kind of tires you are running, your rear spring rate, how much pressure you have in the air shocks, etc. I went from no wheel hop to terrible wheel hop when I put soft compound tires on. I had to replace my sagging rear springs, lower the pressure in the shocks, and put on some southside lift bars to get rid of it all. There has been some good posts on this subject in the past. Also, wheel hop is always more severe with a manual tranny.

Rich, I have none with a 4 speed and street slicks. New bushings/gas shocks/stiff springs/ and ugly, but functional ladder bars.

We'll see what goes down when I ditch the ladders, which I kinda like, but too many horror stories here about them rippin' out of the frame. Don't want to damage my baby!

I think the answer is that with fresh suspension components the stock Chevelle rear is a very, very good setup. Much better than a leaf spring car.

So consider yourself lucky!

Mike, I'll have the car home next week for some wrenching, I'll pop a roll or two.

And by asking the question, I'm more and more getting the sense of them being very "retro". Even though I just bought some mint boxed lowers from racer1320, I may just replace all the fasteners in the ladders to eliminate the "frame pull through" problem and run em. I like retro...

ladders, tripower, etc....

I had a '69 Elcamino that would Boil the tires without missing a beat http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif But it developed SEVERE wheel hop when I put a set of McCreary Road Star's.

so then can we fairly assume that with tires that hook better the suspension components become increasingly critical in keeping the tires n the pavement??

for once a logical, intuitive conclusion...
better than that gear ratio thread...LOL

Donnow Rich, maybe we can only assume that tires are a variable. I'll tell you were I saw alot of it, on leaf spring cars, I mean the rear axle would look like a jumping bean.

the most wheel hop I seen was those mono leaf set-ups on nova/chevy II,camaro.stiff springs and/or air shocks(yuck)tend to inhance wheel hop,a good tight, softly sprung rear susp.most always goes hop-less.if your chevelle does not hop, thats great, let me guess, factory stance, with good bushings and normal tire pressure? my 68 goat hopped so bad it bent a air shock in a L-shape,then installed ladders and they ripped out the frame,so a big, welded plate came to order on both sides of the frame, that ended that.most peaple install the front ladder mount brackets with the supplyed hardware,I think if you use thicker bigger round washers on the inside of frame, with a hole that matches the bolt, the tear out problem would be deleted, eccept for you gene, with that 27,rat monster, and four-speed,some frame-plate welding might make ya sleep easy!also it is good to check how tight the mounts are from time to time.I love the ladder look, reminds me of old willys gasers that had bars so long looked like they mounted to the cross member!
I dont see them to much no more, wish I did, even if they are not the best traction aid!you guys have a good weekend,--67RAT member #199

Rat youre the 3rd guy here thats said , " no one runs 'em anymore" and for that reason I'm thinking of keeping them on and replacing all the hardware with bulletporrof grade 8 moly stuff. Man they work like a charm and I;m starting to like the " balz hangin under the car look".

Resto/retro junkie.

Gene, your duly retained asthetic consultant can't RESIST baby ! Those ladders,(I'm assuming lakewoods)-beadblast them and paint them a bronzy-gold (or eastwoods gold cad spray can kit)and clear cote them...that would be too cool down there.Keep us posted.Shawn

When I first got my car,(396,four speed), the owner had installed some repro redline tires on it. It would spin like crazy but never did wheel hop. Then I put some radials on it and all of the sudden it starts having violent parts breaking wheel hop. A set of SouthSide Lift Bars stopped all my problems, but the way I hear it, wheel hop has a whole lot to do with the condition of your bushings. But I couldn't understand why I started wheel hopping with the radials, because they didn't hook as good as the redlines did!
