I have a 71 Chevelle SS w/350. I keep hearing a klunking sound under the car it sounds like metal to metal. It only makes the sound when I am coming to a stop. But when I put in neutral and come to a stop it will not make the sound. I have tried all kinds of things to make it stop but I have not located the problem yet. I turned the muffler clamps down, so that the nuts are facing down, But no luck. I also thought it might be the emergency cabel so I took that off, but that did not work. I need help please.

How about the tranmission mount? or crossmember? Is it all bolted in tight ?

Try pulling your drive shaft and greasing the inside of the transmission slip yoke. Sounds like yours is sticking.

also check ujoint wear on the driveshaft, if it happens when the trans downshifts as you slow down could be worn ujoints.

While checking your ujoints look at the pinion free play, could also be the source.

Bigbenn, you're just going to have to keep eliminating them one by one, or have a good maechanic take a ride with you. It's really no problem to drop your driveshaft, or even move it in place and see if there's any undue play. I'd check this ( u joints) after your check of the tranny crossmember.
