: Exhaust
gbeck Feb 28th, 00, 5:47 PM Hey, does anyone have any expierience with glass packs? I want to use them on my 68 big block, and they come in many lengths, I assume that the longer they are the quieter. Am I right? and what length would be good for a big block? I want it fairly noisey but not too loud that the cops will be chasing me everywhere. Thanks for any input.
drptop70ss Feb 28th, 00, 6:22 PM I would shelve the glasspack idea, if you are talking about the straight through style of muffler. Big blocks move a lot of air, and I dont think there is any way you wont have the cops all over you with em. I used to use thrush straight throughs with a 400 smallblock in a nova, and when I switched to a 396 the noise was unreal, whereas they were streetable with the 400. I would stick to a good turbo style muffler.

John Lumadue Feb 28th, 00, 6:46 PM Glass packs are terrible, loud, obnoxious and do not make any power. If you want great sounding and powerful mufflers go with 3 chambered Flow Masters. they are expensive but what a difference compared to glass packs.
Larry Feb 28th, 00, 8:42 PM gbeck, it's your car...knock yourself out. FWIW, 2 chamber Flowmasters must be nearly as loud if not louder than glaspaks, and MAY provide a performance enhancement. But other than that...go crazy.
70 SS 454 Feb 28th, 00, 9:57 PM i have read claims that turbos(specifically walker dynomax super turbo) are the least restrictive and therefore make the most power..they happen tp b ewhat was on my chevelle when i got it..
whats the consensus on this
note they are very mellow but throaty when you get on it ...which i like

JJ'65 Feb 29th, 00, 3:20 PM My EC had glasspaks on it when i got it (long, long, time ago)> they were shot after a short while. I replaced them. Sounded good--around town. Took a trip to Mexico. After about two hours on the highway, steady throaty roar didn't sound so good at all. Still had 20 hr. to go. They lasted a few months and were shot too
Do yourself and your neighbors a favor and get some good performance mufflers that will last longer, make less noise, and perform better.
gbeck Feb 29th, 00, 4:10 PM Ok, you convinced me I will get flowmasters. Should I get 2 or 3 chamber?
70 Chevelle SS 454 Feb 29th, 00, 4:55 PM On my car i have hooker headers, 2 1/2 all the way out back, and what are called flowmaster big block mufflers. I know for sure they are 3 chambers but im not sure what series flows. Im guessing there a 30 or 50 series. I LOVE it loud and with the 3 chambers its loud. Im 17 and am always looking for fun, so, i hold the record for setting off the most car alarms off in one trip up the parking structure(23). Does anyone have a car like this with the flows and knows what series they are... thanks
Ralph Feb 29th, 00, 8:31 PM gbeck,
I would recomend flowmaster's 30 series, it is a little quieter than the 50 series outside the vehicle, it uses a low pressure ballance chamber that makes a larger low pressure area behind the "power chamber" than the 50 series, which leads to better scavenging of exharst gasses and an great tone. Use an H-pipe and at least 2 1/2 inch, 3 would be even better, also I don't know how the big block series mufflers from Flowmaster perform but they are designed for motorhomes. Go to www.flowmastermufflers.com (http://www.flowmastermufflers.com) and they will send you a free catalog. Hope this helps . . . Ralph
bigyellow Mar 1st, 00, 9:14 AM I have a big block and two-chamber Flowmasters on my 69. The exhaust tubing is 3" and really really loud, but my god it sounds sooo good. It comes out in front of the rear tires. I bought flowmasters bolt on 2.5" kit w/ 2 chamber delta flows and it was loud but quieter than the 3", but i didnt like the sound as much and changed backed to the 3". Beware...the cops dont appreciate a loud car though...

L6571SS Mar 1st, 00, 3:55 PM I have had glasspacks on my truck for a few years now with no problems. They aren't terribly loud untill you get on it, haven't had any trouble with cops either.
