: See Thru Fuel Filters???

I bought a Mr. Gasket see thru fuel filter and installed it about a week ago. Since then I have seen several posts saying that these filters let too much dirt by and can even be dangerous, is this true??? Also, when the engine is running, you can see tons of bubbles moving around in the filter, should this be happening??? Is the filter leaking air into the fuel or something???

I wouldn't run a glass filter because I have personally seen two of them break. One time, a wrench slipped and broke the filter, and we started blowing fuel at 7psi! The second time, we lost one due to a battery explosion. Please go get yourself a metal filter. It's just not worth the risk! Take care - and get a metal filter http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif. Jeff

Also, the see through filters are not legal at the track. Never mind the fire hazard.

The Mr. Gasket style filters with the plastic replaceable elemenent are (unfortunatly) WORTHLESS.

I have a 65 Fairlane that the gas tank had rusted out, we didn't realize this at first..In a aid to attempt to figure out why we kept starving for fuel we put one of these clear filters on, it worked for the huge chunks, but we pulled the lid off the carb and both fuel bowls were FILLED with rust. I don't mean just a little bit, they were filled to about 1/4" of the top of the carb (basically where the fuel level stopped). It was amazing to see that much rust in a carb, when we dumped it out, more rust than fuel came out.

On the other hand, I've ran a Russel clear filter (requires AN fittings) and this thing filters out everything; helps that the fuel system is all brand new now though. I wasn't aware they weren't track legal though, kind of a bummer. Time to switch.

Oh yeah, if your getting alot of bubbling/perculating through the filter, than you're drawing air in from somewhere after the fuel tank. I would run it and see if it stops first, it may just be trapped air. Also; don't buy the Mr. Gasket chrome filters either, I've tried two and both of them leaked at the point where the two halves are stamped together. Worthless.

Ditto on the glass filters they are a fire hazard. I had one break and got lucky it did not ignite. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif

I've never seen any of my friends' cars flunk tech because of a clear filter--glass or plastic. I believe mine's glass and it certainly never failed. Also, i've used one since '91 without any problems. And the last time I checked the fuel bowls were as clean as a whistle.

I'd loose the glass/plastic filter and just use the stock QJet or a dual fuel line/filter setup. Try blowing through it to see how restrictive it is. Had a buddy that gained a .10 by changing from the see through to incarb filter. He was running out of steam on the topend. when from 12.50 to 12.38s

My glass filter must be made out of Pyrex http://www.chevelles.com/forum/tongue.gif I've had it for 10 years and never had a leak. However, I am concidering a canister type filter.

Here's something that bugs me about this time every year. While going over the list of "perishables" needing replacement each spring, I have yet to find a replacement element for a canister type, fuel filter I have.

It came with a donor car (it eventually gave its organs so that others could live http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif) and did such a great job, I moved it to the pride and joy. Each year, I search for a replacement element only to be confronted by shrugged shoulders and blank stares.

I don't recall any markings on the canister or the element. It has 4 or 5 discs stacked up, making for a bunch (that's the technical term) of surface area.

So far, I've just cleaned it each year (using mineral spirits) and been good to go. I'm beginning to think they're supposed to be cleanable...

Why all the fuss. I walked into my local Carquest and had like a $3-4 metal canister that is completely good to go.

Do not worry about the bubbles in the fuel filter. These are probably not air, judt fuel vapors that separate in the filter. I worked some years ago on this "problem" for an engine manufacturer and we found out that the suspected air leaks did not actually exist--it was fuel vapors that separate out when the fuel sees a pressure change as it navigates the inlet to the filter or is formed by the heat of the fuel pump.

My 66ss has a 396. I bought an almost new (less than 25 miles) holley 750. It had an an-fitting setup already feeding it (75$ bucks worth). I upgraded to all an style fittings and braided hose to match the carb. For a filter I used a K&N cleanable unit, It needs an fittings on both inlet and outlet and is easly cleanable with some carb cleaner. Unfortunately you need an-fittings, and it is not cheap. Almost 70$. But you just unscrew the end, remove the fine screen and spray some carb cleaner through it.

Im with you Wes. The one I bought for my 409 now resides on the shelf in my garage.

Fire scares the hell out of me!

Which makes me think of a good "tip of the day". Are we carrying fire extinguishers in our Chevelles? I think im going to toss one in the trunk when my 409 goes on the road.
