: driveline input yolk on turbo 400 won't go all the way in!!

I had the driveline shortened for the turbo 400 BB combo I put in my 72 elcamino. the yolk hits the o-ring on the tail shaft of the trans, goes a little past and then the splines inside the yoke won't get past the machined surface just before the o-ring. I was told it should go past this point freely. I tried filing down the inside splines a bit but not luck.

Any ideas?? It is a short shaft 400 from a 73 camino. I think the yolk was from the same car and is about 51/2 inches of shaft not counting the u-joint area.

Thanks

So you never used this set up. It is possible that the spines in the yoke or the output shaft of the trans are twisted. Stop by a drivline shop and see if you can get the yoke checked, or borrow a new yoke and try it on the trans. It should slip all the way in.

Is the outside of the yoke rusty? If so, need to sand it to shiny metal otherwise it will hit on the bushing on the rear housing.

Do you have a vented yoke? If your yoke is not vented YANK THE O-RING OFF THE OUTPUT SHAFT. You'll starve the splines for ATF which lubricates them. If the yoke is vented, you need the O-ring, in addition, you'll need to assure that the splines are lubed with the special spline grease.

I tried it on two turbo 400s and it won't slide past where the inside of the yolk spines meet with the machined surface just before the oring. The inside part of the yolk that does not have splines does pass the o-ring but then when the splines hit the machined surface just before the o-ring it stops on both tranies. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

ya I thought about that too so I removed the tail housing and it still stops! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

the yolk has a plug in the back but it has a 1/8" or so hole in the center of it. So it should be ok with the o-ring. thanks

I had this type of problem with my T- 400, after a lot of frustration I went to a trans shop and they found it to be the tail housing. Try pulling yours off and seeing if the yoke will go through the hsg and then try it on the splines, this may help narrow it down a bit.

There are two different tailshaft housings. One is large and one is small. The small one will not let the yolk slip all the way. I had the same problem. A good used one cost me $35.00 at the local trans shop.
