I'd like to buy a '72 non-SS dash for my '70 but I've heard that these have seat belt warning lights. Where on the dash would they be? Is it noticeable?

It is not noticeable. It is a dark spot under the 120 mph part of the speedo.

Am I totally missing something? I thought the seat belt warning light on '72s was a rectangular shaped opening near the cigarette lighter.

I not really into making a SS clone out of my car so I plan on retoring it to the way it was originally. My current dash is beat up and cracked so I'm just getting a replacement which is out of a '72.

It's not just the non ss dash that has the seat belt light. All 1972 & up have the seat belt light. Mine(72 SS 454) has it & it is an original SS. I have the build sheet & the protect-o-plate too.

Actually its in the instrument cluster. If you use your orginal instrument cluster in your new dash you will never know the difference.

Shawn,

I thought you wanted your vehicle original???

1970 dashes

have green numbers and lite-up green

1971-1972 dashes

have white numbers and lite-up blue

This has caused many-a-problem for a lot of restorers.

Just wanted to let you know.

And for everyone else out there...
The 70-72 factory radios follow the same rules!

Just for the record, not all 1972 Chevelles came with a seat belt warning system. Mine has one and so does most of the cars that I have seen. But there is always that one exception. While at a car show about a year ago in West Virginia, I happened to see a 1972 Chevelle, 4dr without the seat belt warning light. The original owner was sitting around the back of the car. The car was not restored and he told me that the car was totally original and it never had the seat belt warning system. This was the first and only one that I've seen without one, but I'm sure their are more. Perhaps this was a very early build 72, I didn't check the numbers.

Coppertop: I do want to keep it original so I will be using my old speedometer and everything else and just putting it in the new dash. I am just buying the shell of a dash. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Bryan,

Your absolutely correct, I have a '72 that was built on 10-7-71 and doesn't have a seat belt warning light system. I can't be sure that it's the original dash, but I know when I had it out for gauge service about 16 months ago, it had the correct dating.
