I just got off the phone with Larry Fischer of D&L Transmissions. He expects to be stocking a new 1" cluster shaft by the end of the month. This new shaft will have an O-ring at the tapered front, to seal those agrivating leaks that are so common to a tired Muncie. In the past the only sure cure was to have the cluster shaft hole rebushed. That is still a sure cure, and the only cure for a damaged hole. But for the typical tired Muncie with a loose fit in the front of the case, that constantly leaks, this should be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not to mention less expense and downtime. The new shaft should be about $24. Larry now has the prototype and should have shafts in stock by the end of the month. Nothing special about installation except that the sharp, inside corner of the hole a
should be rounded before installing the shaft to make it easier for the O-ring to go in. You will STILL have to completely tear down the tranny and at that time it would be good to install a rebuild kit.
Let me say again this is for curing a leaking front shaft hole. It won't work for a damaged hole or a hole that has been excessively worn. If the front hole in your Muncie is so worn and oversized that a cluster shaft will just drop all the way through it and hit the floor, then most likely it can only be repaired by rebushing. And Larry can do that.
