I just hooked up my tach to HEI ignition and it only goes up to 3000 rpm , what could the problem be?

is it an original tach? my understanding is the original tach "counted" the revolutions on the distributor shaft, where as the hei vintage ones were electronic, not electrical. when i put in my hei i called performance distributors, accel and msd and msd had the only one that worked with the old electric "counter" tachs, hope this helps

My 70ss tach will go full to 7000 (yes pegged!) with my HEI setup, only mod is an accel supercoil in the cap. So I would say there is a problem with the tach, electrical or mechanical.
